The tale of 3 builds -OR- How projects multiply mysteriously

Isn't that how it always begins...hey, a project car, kind of incomplete, let's get it and slowly pick up the parts to complete the car.

Darn, now I know what the car was missing parts, they are impossible to find....to the back burner, under the towel, ignored (but not forgotten).

Months later - hey look, another partial car, BUT, its got a couple of the parts I need for the other one...snag #2...dammt, its a truck, not a buggy, oh well.

Okay, suck it up and pay the evil eBay price for the parts you want. Get most everything you need, so lets take this thing apart. Seriously, the chassis is in that bad of shape, great, what am I going to do now :(

Okay, suck it up buttercup, buy a chassis blank and have a new one made. Sure, it will end up costing you more than you paid for the car (5 times more), but what the heck...

Oh hey, look a couple more project chassis...sure, why not.

Enough lead up...on to some pictures and the plan.

Plan: Build a runner/racer TRX1, something I'm not afraid to push at the track. Build a 2nd back up car that is there if I break mine or if my son decides he wants to run the same car I do. Then, take the best of the best and build a full stock car, without mods, as designed to be a pretty car that I will probably end up running as well...because I just dont do shelfers. Build 'em to race 'em, or pass them along to a collector so I dont race 'em (this will be very hard for me or expensive for the guy who wants to shelf it).

Trucks tossed to the side for now, the 2 buggies are pulled apart, the several parts lots purchased sorted, cleaned somewhat organized...

As you can see, some have color...well, my OCD wont let it be a 'mixed' car....so a Vintage Dylon gave its life to satisfy my OCD.

And I couldnt leave it there...I HAD to assemble it before I had all my hinge pins and hardware sorted out...I did stop for the night finally. Tomorrow will be for ordering up spares and begging for some parts that just cannot be found at a shop (easily if at all)...

Nice!

When you did the dye, did you boil the parts? I'd make sure to boil any of the remaining ones that aren't dyed too. Traxxas nylon seems to get brittle. I wouldn't use the white rod ends either. They seem to be the weakest

Yes, will be boiling all parts eventually. The white rod ends will go on the white car, but the pink one will have them too, since I have 9 pink ones already :) yellow car is getting B6 i think, havent completely decided yet.

Thanks Nomad, it's my standard paint for all my cars. Soon I can do a fleet pic...

Kinda roller status...I couldnt stand it. I re-used the Losi ball studs & cups for now. I do not like the blue caps on the shocks or blue-ish on the motor plate. But I do not have a place I've done anodizing at locally. If I find one, it is on....

Some hardware is temporary, the white shock ends are temp too. Now, off to spend some hard earned money on spares and stuff I "need" (like a hole in the head).

I have heard that associated shock caps can fit on traxxas and vice versa. Might be worthwhile to try swapping a black plastic cap on there.

also, in case you are interested, I think strc racing makes a top shaft that accepts a B4 slipper setup. its for a slash, but I believe it drops in.

I've used the STRC stuff before, its great. There are also several Hydradrive top shafts on eVilBay right now too. I'll test the 'other' shock caps :) STRC makes them too IIRC.

This first car went together very smooth and easy. Suspension feels really, really good. I have some clean up to do with the trans, its a little tight, but I rushed it, so I blame myself. Soon enough, it will be under its own power again.
