Help With Box Art Details

Getting ready to do some box art buggy paint jobs and I need a couple tips from the all knowing guru's of our beloved RC10. I'm trying to separate what is paint and what is decals. The rere decals would have one believing that all that is needed is a base color and black paint job and that everything else is decals. I know that all the blue, white and pink striping is paint on the original, as well as the big black "air scoops" on the front sides, but what about the big white "10" on the top/nose? Was it painted or was it a number decal? I'm pretty sure it was not included on the original decal sheets, but I could be wrong. I know there were some variations. Maybe the big white 10 was just aftermarket number decals like the ones we use from Autographics? I've been working on the colors for a while to get them correct and now I just need a little more info before I paint a few of these. I want them to be as correct as possible.

Ya know Basher, I could be wrong (I often am) but I've built two vintage kits bitd (both Edingers) and I don't remember there being a boxart decal set included with either kit. There was a decal set included but it was just manufacturers logos and such. I think I still have one of them from my Dad's kit because he wanted a Mustang body not a buggy. I've never seen boxart decals until the re-re.

I'm pretty sure you are correct. So the question remains, is the big white 10 painted or were decals used?

It's hard to see but they look like decals on the original. That dark outline might be a shadow from the decal being on the surface of the lexan.

Still couldn't make a boxart replica with it, but this one was in the Cadillac kits. Not sure if it was all of them, but my 6016 kit had one.

I would guess that AE has (and had at the time) a very resourceful marketing and graphics department that could create just about anything required. Do we know who actually painted the body for the original boxart car? Could you contact AE directly, Steve or Curtis maybe since they're members here?

My main concern was the big 10 which Tamiya Dan answered. Thank you all for your input. You guys never fail to be a priceless source of info. The reason for my questions is two part. #1 I have a new original body for my buggy and I want to paint it right. If the original "10" was painted, I wanted the same. If it was originally a decal or cut vinyl, etc, then the rere decal 10 is probably acceptable for a legitimate vintage restoration. #2 I was considering painting up a few new protech bodys in the same box art style as long as I have the paint mixed up for those who aren't satisfied with just a decal striped body. It sounds like if I paint the base color, black, and stripes, that makes it correct for someone to finish with their choice of decals. Any thoughts?
