Stealth trans case ASC 6565 vs ASC 6564

I hadn't notice until today that the old style 6565 case is still available. This probably has been discussed somewhere on the forums before but I'm not able to find it. Setting aside the differences in idler gear bearing placement, is the old style case better? In other words, would replacing the kit 6564 case in my Worlds re-re with a new 6565 case fix the tight gear problem? ...or would it also require a new top gear as well.

I did this video years ago to demonstrate the poor fitment of the rere case and idler. I think both are at fault, as you can see by the video.

My topshaft was not a problem. Some were. The typical top shaft problem is that the slipper hub hits the motor plate.

Rere stock shown first
Rere idler in 6565 case second (had to use 2 more bearings)
6565 case and 6570 idler shown last

Thanks Jeff. I recall the video but was confused as to which cases were being used. So, I guess it's more a matter of new vs old than modern 6565 vs rere 6564.
Oh how I wish that AE had just gotten the rere transmission right so we wouldn't need to be concerned about when the parts were made. Thanks again.

Modern 6565 and 6570 are what is shown in the video. They are the ones at the end that work. Modern and original 6565 appear to be the same mold

Thanks again Jeff. I just ordered a couple of each (6565 and 6570) from AE. Hopefully they will solve my notchy Stealth problems.

The combination of a 6565 case with a 6570 idler gear and a 9601 top shaft results in a butter smooth transmission.

The only issue I've seen with the new 6565 cases is a lot of side to side movement of the diff. I bought a pack of shims to space them out.

Yes, a 0.010" on both sides worked for me.

Associated 2293 and 3911 comes with the 3/8 shims and some 3/16 as well

what happens if you dont shim the diff if it has slight side to side movement.

Depending on how much movement we are talking about, it could mess with your inner axle joint clearances, which could result in throwing axles. There is also an increased chance of premature wear of drivetrain components. You won't necessarily destroy anything, it's just not optimal and you will have a better experience if you shim it proper. Obviously you want some clearance.
