Bubbleboy’s Stealth Build

The parts bin was screaming at me....build me....build me. Even though I’ve sold almost all my collection, I knew I’d somehow regret it if I didn’t assemble the Nix91 car given all the parts I had amassed over the past couple of years.

Let’s just get right into the dye job. So far it has not gone well. After reading several threads on what to use, the results aren’t even close to what I wanted. So....what not to do. I used RIT golden yellow, about a tablespoon in almost boiling 1L of water. Dipped them in for about 5 seconds and rinsed with cold water. THEY’RE F’IN YELLOW!......See the pics.

So, all the pieces are now sitting in a peroxide bath. Update in a week.

I believe this must be RC Karma.

Ahh..... that sucks.

Yeah, waaaaay too strong. Those parts suck up dye very quick, so it has to be a super diluted mix. I did mine with like 3 or 3 1/2 qts of water and only 1/8th tsp. of golden yellow dye. Only left them in a few seconds on like medium heat.

I don't know if peroxide is really going to do anything. :?

Not to be a sceptic, but I have to agree with you about the peroxide. We’ll give it some time. I may try bleach as well if all else fails. Worst case, I buy the parts again.

Hey, if the peroxide or bleach doesn't work, maybe you could dye them black and sell them to Mike.

I still have the black dye from the Yokomo rims I just did. These parts just might be destined for it!

He could but they wouldn't work with my chassis set!

Any noticable change in color yet?

I swapped the peroxide bath for bleach. The bleach did a little bit, but not nearly enough. Going to sand the porous outer layer of the parts this weekend. Pics to follow

Be careful sanding as it causes issues with how any future dye is absorbed. I'd try that white dye first.

thats not white dye. Its to keep color from bleeding in fabrics so that won't work on that nylon shapeways part. There is really no white dye since white is the absence of color.

I kinda like the look of it as its pre-patina'd but thats just my opinion. Most of the stuff I buy new looks like that by the time I get done building anything anyway

Special K is indeed correct, there is no 'white dye'... that was just me playing with Photoshop.... just being the pain in the butt they keep me around here to be.
