The dreaded 250mm box

These were a common sight at tracks across the UK during my racing days. Race scrutineering tents all had one and if you touched the sides at any point through suspension movement post-race you were disqualified and your time was scratched.

Incidentally they also had a length requirement to strictly adhere to the BRCA rules, which was 460mm, but i don't ever recall this being an issue for anybody. I have left screw-in bars at either end to allow for length-panels to be added at a later date should it become necessary. It also means tweaking the screws results in slight width adjustments, again should they be required.

The regs stated 250mm was the max width, so the box was always 251mm or thereabouts. Lots of anxiety and angry dads post-race and i saw plenty of unhappy folks gathered around these over the years.

We have put this one together for the UK Revival vintage racing scene for 2021, and it has since been spray lacquered and suitably sticker-bombed with vintage race decals. I am hoping more racers add stickers throughout the year.

Just thought i would post some pics on here as i am sure this will bring back some (not so great) memories for some ex-racers!

The boxes we used were open and if your car rolled through you were good. Nobody checked the width during suspension movement, that's a bit rough

Ours was a full push down to the deck to check for wheel camber changes. Sometimes just a tyre swap to a different side-wall profile could push you over the edge....
