I read some informative posts here about how good/cheap the Hobbywing 1060 brushed ESC is for a brush-motored basher. I looked around Amazon and eBay and found quite a few ESCs from random far east brands and vendors that all looked suspiciously like the Hobbywing unit and all had '1060' in their part numbers.

So is the 1060 a Hobbywing design that's being copied/cloned by these other brands? Are they all crap except for the 'real' Hobbywing unit? Or Is the 1060 made by a third party that Hobbywing and these other brands are labeling as their own and they are all more or less the same thing?

Or at $20-$25 does it even matter?

My view, the very minimal price difference isn't worth it. The real ones are only $22. The off brands would have to be nearly free for me to even waste my time.

Given its price, I was leary of the 1060 for a long time. I finally gave in. I now have a couple 1060's (fixing to buy another) and a 1080.

So the Hobbywing 1060 is their own product that's being copied, not one of many they they themselves are putting their name on? That's what I meant.

The real 1060 is also rebranded by several places, used in their RTR cars. Some other brands of esc's are also rebranded Hobbywings.

But there are lots of threads and videos around about fake 1060's. The wire color seems to be one of the main giveaways.

I've read that lots of people actually have good luck with the fake ones. But they are only a few dollars cheaper, so I don't even bother. I buy mine from Amain and they show up in a sealed Hobbywing box.

Just got a new HW 1060 in the mail today. This thing is small! And somehow better specs than any of the other brushed ESCs I have in my stash of (admittedly lower-end) so-far-unused ESCs. Makes me want to replace all of them with these things. Also makes me wonder if there's even a market for them when you can buy something apparently this good this cheap. :shrug:

It does have a few quirks.

When used on heavier loads, you sometimes need the extra capacitor pack to prevent brown-outs. Even then, that might only be with nickel batteries.


If it was a vehicle that I planned to run a lot, I'd probably step up to the 1080.

One of our racers in the Iconic Cup vintage race series which uses brushed motors and had his high end old school ESC die on him when racing, and his only option to keep racing was to buy a 1060 and fit it. He went faster with the 1060.

Your suggestion that Hobbywing was just putting their name on a cheap, no name ESC couldn't be further from the truth. Most ESCs included in RTR cars are usually car manufacturer branded Hobbywing ESCs, and they will sell cheaper unbranded versions of their own ESCs to other vendors, usually older or lower spec versions using cheaper components and no packaging. For example a Surpass 1060 is just an older Hobbywing 1060 without the nice packaging and accessories, and without the customer service backup from Hobbywings distributors.
They are also copied by other factories so anything extremely cheap with no name is often a clone.

I wasn't suggesting that it was the case, I was simply asking IF it was.
