I recently decided to paint my original circa 1990 rc10 shell.
However the ancient overspray mask doesn't want to peel off. Even in small spot it feel pretty stuck on and I can scratch it off with my fingernail, but it seems to be shredding when I do that.

Is there some kind of trick to this that won't scratch up the finish of the shell?

I might try some good (sticky!) duct tape first.

If that didn't work, I'd try lightly scrubbing it off with some type of liquid. A sink of hot soapy water would likely do it.

My first guess would be steam?

The tape worked, but the overspray film now is off. This is a car I purchased new from a shop, but you are mentioning the over spray film was not around then. Even if that wasn’t the original body, which it was it would have been purchased pre-black parts, pre-worlds.

Since you just posted this up, I assume this is the body that you are referring to.

If it is, that is not the original body for a Team Car. It looks like a Protech 1, for a short arm car. Its definitely not a Viper.

I have an original AE Viper body, and it didn't have film on it.

That is really odd. I have a brand new in box CE kit with all black parts, rear worlds arms and worlds bulkhead making it the swan song CE car (obviously built post Worlds car since it was using worlds parts) and it has a viper with no protective film. I don’t recall the AE bodies getting film until much later.

I can't say I've ever seen overspray film on an original RC10 body.

Unless someone sprayed/painted some liquid mask on the outside at some stage. If it's applied too thin it behaves like you're explaining.

I must have gotten this after but I can't think of when I would have had 15-20$ to buy a body of all things.

That only makes this weirder. I simply must have picked up one at some point.

I wonder if goo gone would have worked

I'm thinking all the usual ways of removing stickers or anything adhesive would be different for overspray film, because that film isn't applied with adhesive. Pulling it off with tape was a good idea. Maybe I'd have tried a hair dryer.
