letting the magic smoke out of a motor.

In my rc10t2 I had been running an associated DS spec motor that came with the car. Yesterday it started letting out a lot of smoke. It doesn't seem like it's over geared, it wasn't hot. as well the esc and the battery seemed to be just fine.
It lost significant speed while running before I noticed the burning smell.

What causes this? is there a way to rehab the motor and keep it going. Is it a goner?

It wasn't designed as a rebuildabe motor, but that doesn't mean that it can't be done.

As long as there isn't physical damage, it should be salvageable. But do you have the tools to do it?

I am pretty certain that I don't.

If nothing else, I'm sure that the brushes are trashed and the comm probably needs to be cut. Its also possible that there is further damage, if it got hot enough to smoke and noticeably slow down.

What gearing were you running?
