I only ever had one set of these, on a GT that is long gone. I've not seen another set since.
Anybody know who made them or what they were for?

Associated makes those. They came out after the white styled ones.

are they the same part number as the white clamps or the modern spring clips?

i had an early rc10t3 team and it still had the clamps with a screw in it, then the later t3s had the clamps with no screw. This is so wierd, i searched tower and rc10.com manuals but cant find a part number for the ones with a screw.
then my T2 manual shows them but it doesnt have a part number for them but they did come on the 6474 parts tree.

:edit:
theres no individual PN, but a couple parts are 6474 from the shock parts tree, the clamp included. i saw this in the rc10b2 manual online, also the early gt, and t2 manual. =]

the shock clamp, collar, and cup are all 6474

Yeah my SWB T3 and T2 came with em. Wonder why they changed them, never had one slide up and saves a bit of weight not having heaps of clips there.

I have a few of those from a shock lot that I got from ebay. The one's I'm looking at are perfectly symetrical (top looks identical to the bottom). Since there is no lip on the bottom to center the spring (like the white clamps), I'm assuming that there was also a thinner piece that's placed between the clamp and the spring. This would help to center the sping on the shock body so they wouldn't rub up against each other.

On a slightly different note, I have 2 types of white clamps. One with the flange and the other without. Was this change corresponding with a different model release, or just a change during the lifecycle of the part?

yeah the black ones with no lip, they require a seperate spring retainer/collar at the top as you suggested. i can second you on the white ones, i have some white ones like you described where the screw can pass all the way thru to the other side. then some where the screw is captured/enclosed by plastic at the end. itd be interesting if someone could post a timeline haha.

I believe there were probably a few reasons:

1. People stripped the clamp - There are some people that just love to torque the heck out of everything.

2. Accuracy - Inseting a spacer is more accurate (for the average person) than the clamp on type. From a set up standpoint, it's a lot easier to insert 1 big, 1 medium and 1 small spacer vs. measuring each shock to ensure that you've spaced 7/16 th of an inch from the top of the shock.

3. Reliability - If the clamp was placed too loose or over tightered and stripped, one big jump and the spring may slide up.

just theories...

There was a seperate collar that centered the spring with these clamps. Just a lip basically. I don't understand why they changed them either. Even after the screw hole strips somewhat, they usually won't slide, unless they are really bad. Also, after they strip once you can stick a 5-40 screw in it and start all over. I have a stash of these and the older clamps I still use for racing on my GT2. I also have some HG collars which are nice. I also still use the old style spring cups, they are much better than the new ones IMHO.

On the accuracy bit they're back where they started now with the threaded shock bodies  I still prefer the clamps over threaded bodies though.

I use the clip-ons to set my clamps at the same level, then remove the slip-ons
I guess if i had the threaded shocks I'd do the same still.
