Hi there,

I recently could get a gear set of a Circuit 20 Differential without the gearbox. Intention was to built my Fairlady oder my Baja Body. Both shelf queens, no runners.
But during research I noticed that there is a difference in the gearboxes for the ones with differential and the ones without. I noticed that in the spare part list of Racing Baja (originally equipped with diff) and the Fairlady spare part list. The boxes have different codes. Meanwhile I could check out that the Racing Baja has kind of internal steel panel attached to the inside wall of the gear box and fastened with screws from outside.

Does anybody knows the purpose of that steel panel?

The Plate that is attached with a screw from the outside of to the inside gear box is used to keep the diff centered, the notch in the plate allows very little movement left and right while spinning to prevent the adjustable diff nuts from rubbing on the inside wall of the gear box. There is only 0.06" (1.5mm) from the outer nut to the wall on average. Without the plate the diff will drift and rub against the wall creating drag and for a race buggy that is not a good thing. You can solve this issue with washers on the inside of the axle to act as shims to keep it positioned.

Hope this helps, we are racing vintage Kyosho 1/8 Racing Buggies

Great!
Thanks for that detailed explanation. No it is clear, and I will be able to install the diff into my Fairlady.
