Just looking for some advice on Ipods..... the wife just bought one and she is struggling to figure out what is what, where is the best place to download, etc., etc. I haven't had the time to figure it out for her, so any suggestions, advice, etc. would be greatly appreciated (she is not the most compute literate person on the planet). Thanks all!

I've only used the ITunes store so I will watch this thread with interest.

you have to have Itunes on your computer. it will play quite a few formats but almost all of my music is in MP3 format. in the past I have used Limewire to download music but really I prefer to buy the CD and rip the songs at the highest bit rate I can.

what got me started on one is my wife won one from work in a raffle. it sat in the package for about a year until one day I said, screw this, i'm going to figure this thing out. Now I have the original 10Gb a 30Gb that's maxed and I'm looking to get the 80Gb

iTunes is where I get everything that I don't rip myself. I have a 30g black iPod video, a white 10g gen 2 that is wired into my Jeep head unit and a 1 gig orange iShuffle that I use on a stationary bike or when running.

If you want a great source of information and FAQ's about anything and everything iPod related, head to http://www.ipodlounge.com and the forums there. If it's not there, it probably doesn't exist.

DO NOT PAY FOR ITUNES! lol, its a ripoff.

If you want music, make a napster.com account, its $12.95 a month, and its UNLIMITED DOWNLOADS OF Songs.

Once you get all the songs you want for the most part.. get a program called soundtaxi pro.
its like $25 bucks one time purchase. It will let you convert all of the Downloaded napster files, into generic MP3 compatible files, then you can import them into itunes without a issue. http://www.soundtaxi.info/

I have something like 5 thousand songs from napster already and they are all sitting on my ipod. I know its kinda a backward way to do it, but you save LOTS of money and only have to pay $12.95 a month for napster.

I still use cassettes in the car...and vinyl at home via an ancient Dual 1009SK turntable. Ok, I do have a CD player jacked in, but still through a pair of McIntosh 75w valve amps and 1970's Altec Lansing Voice of the Theater speakers. You would cringe at my home theater setup...but doing vintage sound is pretty cool.

Actually I don't usually listen to music in the car or on the bikes.

Mcintosh labs stuff is nice! I wish I could afford one of their setups. My office is just across the river from the factory. I keep meaning to take the tour of it but haven't gotten around to doing so.

Are you serious??? That is funny but cool at the same time. Just last year when my grandma passed and while going through her things she had a box of my old records, I about fell over thinking how much I played those things, I wanted to hear them but no record player around. Low and behold while diggin through the garage I found one and palyed them my son looked at them and said uh Mom what is that thing? Is that what they had back in the day when you were a kid mind you Im only 33. Now that is a sad thing. I actually have a friend that still has a working 8track anyone remember those?

I USED to use (havent used it in AGES) WinMX on my computer. It was free to download the program, and I had to get a Patch one time (also free), but it worked great. Its kinda like a shareing thing. You can get anything anyone else thats running it has. My Girls always yell at me me when I say something about using it now, telling me, "DADDY, thats ILLEGAL". Is it? If not it easy, fun, and FREE.

i still havent got an ipod. i just know the second i get one something better will come out...

i still prefer cd's to mp3's... granted i burn all my cd's to mp3s so i can play them on my computer, but theres alot of romance and just simple TANGIBLE coolness when you get a new cd (or tape or album) that you lose when you just dl something off itunes.

If you feel like ripping your dvd's and loading them onto your ipod. Give me a PM and I can forward you the software. You might want to wait until your more familiar with using the ipod though.

The ipod will handle just about any sound file, except for Microsofts own wma files.

Just load the iTunes software and let it find any music files you already have. Insert any CD and let iTunes rip it to the hard disk. Plug the iPod into the PC and it will automatically copy everything over to the iPod. Simple.

Apart from ripping CDs if you want to buy music online the easy choice is the iTunes store. Amazon now sell songs as mp3 files in the USA as do some of the smaller online stores.

my dad still has a brand new panasonic (i think) 8 track car head unit in the box that he bought in the late 70's, early 80's. it never found it's way into the car. my parents home stereo has a turntable, 8 track, and a cassette player. and the all still work.
