Derustification the Frankentruck way

I don't have an ultrasonic cleaner yet, but wanted to get this B3 buggy cleaned up. Yes I know it's missing 1 dog bone. Other than that, it's practically new. My kid would say it's lit and I'm cap. Thanks? 😁

My required materials and equipment are ready. You eat the entire tub of yogurt first. Just a pro tip.
.

.
Then the parts in need of restoration go in with enough CLR to fulfill cover. This happens to also be how much I had left.

.
It will now sit for a day or so and I'll periodically shake it a little. When removing rust from a mix of blued and non-blued steel parts, the batch tends to all take on the black surface finish. So that may happen to the outdrives, the bellcrank spring, and the front hinge pin brace. Ok with me.

Or for anyone over 40 or without a Gen Z nearby, "That's a great solution. Rust is the enemy."

Thanks for translating! :D I literally had no idea what you were saying...

Hah! Too funny. My son was just telling me what "bussin" meant the other day. I wonder if we get a group of 40+ year olds together if the Gen Z crowd couldn't understand us? Probably wouldn't happen, since we raised Gen Z and they already know our lingo!

I was thoroughly confused by above said nonsense lingo. When my gen z kids and/or their friends yap that gibberish, I simply turn away and ignore them, they know better. Unlike their mother, who participates in the nonsense

It was getting pretty swampy looking after 4.5 hrs so I changed out for some fresh CLR.

In what step of the process does the Perma Blue and 3-in-One come into play?

After I'm satisfied that the rust is gone, then it gets the bluing dip. When that's done and most of the loose black oxide is rubbed off, then they get oiled.

Two decades teaching will do that to you. To be fair, our language didn't make sense to our parents either. Youth invent their own language to create their own social sphere. Then, one day, they're squares too.

On a restoration related note, I haven't used CLR like this, but have had decent luck with 20% vinegar followed by a vibratory tumbler. I'm interested to see your results.

I've done this a few times, just thought I'd take a few pics this time.

One of my all time favourite quotes comes from Grandpa Simpson " I used to be with it , then they changed what "it" is , now I find "it" strange and frightening and it'll happen to you too !"

Drained, rinsed, and towel drying.
.

.
A few notes:
1. If there was anything on thd screw threads (like nylon) you will see it. Some of the screws have a ring on them.
2. Any steel that was zinc plated will likely lose the zinc and other parts may get white spots (like tonsils and strep throat). Before draining I shook/swished around the container and most of rhe white spots came off. They also wipe off.
3. This dogbone apparently has pins that are a different sterl than the rest of the part. The pins took bluing from the parts group jn the CLR and the rest didn't. It will though with the Beechwood.

Before bluing, parts got rinsed with isopropyl alcohol and then patted down with a paper towel to remove the excess.
.
For the bluing, it's good to use a container that you can cover all the parts without needing a lot of the fluid. Cover isn't exactly the right word. I add enough to half cover and get full coverage by shaking and sloshing.

.
After the fluid gets muddy looking I drain it off.
.

.

.
Then I did a 2nd round of bluing fluid. Once done, I drained it again and did another alcohol rinse/shake/drain and pat dry. For draining parts, I have a makeshift strainer made from piece of window screen. This comes in really handy.
.

.
Then back into the container for oil. I drizzle it on and shake the parts around to spread it.
.

.
PXL_20231203_175938851.jpg
.
Once everything is oily, they get spread on a paper towel to absorb the oil and air dry. I skipped the extra bluing gor the outdrives because they took on plenty in the CLR bath, and just oiled them with a Qtip.

Anytime you get used fluids on a countertop or in the sink, be sure to clean it up quickly to avoid stains. Also, if using paper towels like I do, be aware that oil etc soaks through and again can lead to countertop stains.
