Tamiya Polycarbonate Metallic Paint - Backing colors

I'm trying to get a lighter blue metallic finish, after the base Tamiya Metallic Blue has been applied.

I went pretty thick on the Metallic Blue.

Ideally I'd like to match this:

Would Tamiya white, or silver spray, behind the metallic blue, lighten this up? Will either of those actually make it lighter, or did I already go too far on the base coat?

That's why I always do test strips with lexan scraps. That way, you can test different backing colors.

Maybe try putting different color pieces of paper behind the paint to get an idea.

This is about all you can do this deep into it. The backing can change what you have there in about a dozen different ways.

With that said, I would think a silver would get you where you want to be.

Also keep in mind that lighting effects the color, as seen. Metallic and florescent colors have very noticeable changes.

This is Tamiya Metallic Burgundy, backed in gunmetal.

It shines and sparkles in the sun but looks extremely dark inside.

I did make a lexan test strip, you can see it in the second pic above, on the driver side by the hood, but I have no backing paints yet to put on it.

I went ahead and ordered the white, the silver, and the gun metal, and will tape off my test lexan strip, and try those three. Hope to get just a bit lighter.

@juicedcoupe, that Tamiya Brat is sweet! I had the frog in '84 and used the Brat body with it, never painted it that nicely though.

Thanks guys!

That still can be done! Do some spray outs on scrap pieces with different backing colors until you achieve the result you're the happiest with for the final product.

Looks like I picked the wrong base coat to begin with. Should've used this one.

Instead of PS-16:

- in my defense, this was the sample for PS-16:

Had I got the light metallic blue, and then went darker with the backing color, I think I could get closer. Another expensive lesson learned.

I'll still try to salvage this one, too late to quit now :D . Thanks @Lowgear!

TS-54 is not labeled for polycarbonate.

Thanks, yes meant to post PS, I've already learned the difference between TS and PS, that one cost me too.

If I can't make it look better with white or silver, hopefully gun metal will double down on the dark, and make something interesting out of it.

Despite how thick the PS-16 Metallic Blue paint is, it's still transparent in light.

Paints should be here in a week or so.

The PS-49 might be a little too silver for the original colouring wanted.... I used this on my AE86, to match my 1:1 version, and this is how it came out:

With how transparent the PS16 is, the white or silver backing may just work...

Look forward to seeing the results :D

Seems a bit more silver blue, than blue.

Anxiously awaiting the silver, hoping that's the key to getting close to Chevy Marina Blue.

Found this on Tamiya club.

I'm a member over at Tamiyaclub, and asked the builder of this one what paint and method he used. Curious to hear how he did it, if he responds.

Have white, silver, gun metal and black for backing colors now. Will test the strip tomorrow.
