Nikko Be Young - can it be fixed?

Hello all,
Bought an almost mint condition 1980s Nikko Be Young 4x4 for my 7 year old son.
Was great fun, but after around 30 mins of use, the front wheel drive stopped working. Prop shaft to front not turning so seems to be problem in the rear gearbox. Anyway, we found that even on the ice here in Sweden it had loads of traction and was fantastic fun just in rear wheel drive!
Jump forward another day or 2, suddenly steering to the right stopped working, rendering it obviously undrivable.. Gutted!
(We bought it for 70 euros just a few days before)
There is no physical damage to any of the steering components, and have split open the electromagnet coils and all seems physically fine. No breaks in wire etc.
So, all I'm left thinking with my almost no knowledge of electronics like this is that some component or components have failed.
New batteries tested yes.
Any of you have any suggestions before it goes to the tip?
I wanted to attach a photo of the car here but cannot see how.
Thanks in advance!
Woody
