This may be a silly question, but what is the purpose of the two parts circled in red, that go underneath the shock pistons?

All of my modern Tekno buggies don't have anything like it, and even the crappy Traxxas Ultra Shocks on my son's Slash 4x4 don't have one. I'm just curious what it's supposed to do....

If the circled parts are slightly larger in diameter than the pistons they might act as keepers/retainers for the orings.
If so, they would then register in the bore where the threaded portion ends.
This is similar to the oring retention on my Kyosho Platinums and other shocks.
Not sure why they have the oval holes however.

Yup, just as Chuck said, that retains the orings. Some shocks have the body do that job, there are different ways to go about it. I'm not a huge fan of the rere Kyosho shocks. They aren't the worst, but they definitely don't remind me of the gold shocks- the gold standard of vintage shocks.

Oh good grief.....I'm such a dufus!

I'm looking at it like the modern lower cartridge (with a removable top cap design). With a bottom load shock, of course it would need something to retain the o-rings.

My apologies folks....I blame it on being a natural blonde and those 2 shots of bourbon I had earlier! LOL
