Yokomo 870c DOG FIGHTER 'PROJECT'.

Ive been wondering if there are any of the Team Yokomo chassis plate's floating around as used by Masami in the 89 Worlds. They have 4 cells down one side in ladder configuration whilst the other 2 cells ran in line on the other side,making for closer weight distribution to the centre line of the chassis. Anyone know what im on about??

the normal 870c/yz10 chassis has 4 one 1 side and 3 on the other is that what you mean jas?
or was his chassis custom as with a lot of his cars...

Gaz, Masami wasn't the only driver to sport this particular chassis plate. Other Team Yokomo drivers also ran with it too. The cells were set out to bring the weight further inboard closer to the main front belt. They also ran the stock rear arms up front while custom delrin units were fitted to the rear with RC10 rear hub carriers also.

Hey Jason,

the Yokomo chassis you speak of (with the special cell configuration) was Team issue only. It wasn't available to the general public.

There was an American racer in the 1990's named J.D. Beckwith who designed his own Yokomo parts (aptly named "Dukeomo") and designed a chassis with the same principals as the one you mentioned that featured a cell configuration with the cells moved to the centre-line of the chassis. For a short while, these parts were available to the general public.

After watching the 89 Worlds about 1000 times now I couldnt help but notice how flighty Butch Kloeber's Dogfighter was compared to Masami's. Im not if Butch ran the original chassis and if Masami had quite the different car from the u.s. guys. It seemed Butch had the ability to keep up with and he even beet Masami in one of the finals so i was wondering what it was that made Masami's car so well footed and well balanced on the St Ives track? Perhaps the inboard cell layout was before its time as many of the modern 4WD comp cars of today seem to adopt these same principals. Just thinking...hmmmmm

Yokomo released a near perfect replica of Masami's 89 worlds car. It was a very limited production...I don't recall the number.

Ive been busy again with my Yokomo Dog Fighter. Not long after getting that genuine nip 870c bodyshell Jay was releasing his reproductions so mine was sold off in favour of buying a couple of MrLexan's shells. I beleive Jay's repro's are every bit good as the original if not better as the lexan he has used is a little thicker.
Anyway it has been a long road with plenty of hours spent getting this car to where it is now. Sporting a 'V-SPEC' 12 turn single,LRP v7.1 esc,matched 4600 Intellect cells,ball raced alloy steering, a spread spektrum reciever and some modern tyres this 91 come 870c is just about ready to hit the track.
When I first found the fluro yellow rims I wasnt too sure where I'd find a use for them but after running them on my Procat I stuck them in this car so I could test run it. From there I decided on a colour scheme which kind of holds a vintage racer look to it.
So what do you guys think??

I really love how you restored that 870C!!
I agree about the quality of mrlexan repro body, I also have one waiting for a paintjob, but it already looks beautiful.
I noticed that you used black plastic parts instead of the original white ones (arms, ball ends..), I am doing the same on my 870C.
I know that th eoriginal 870C was all white.. but I prefer black plastic, less likely to get dirty.
I think you used the same rear arms as I did, and I notice you did not install the swaybar: is there a reason for this?
If the reason is that fitting a ball stud on the sharp leading edge of these arms is almost impossible, I found a solution which works well and is also quite good looking.
I could post a picture...
Anyway your car is really really nice, I would like mine will look the same at the end of the restoration...
