Is there any way to salvage, hinge pins, drive shafts, etc. with some surface rust?? or are they doomed to the scrap pile??

I'm on the verge of rebuilding a Losi LXT and some of the metal parts have a little bit of surface rust, and Instead of trying to buy all of these new, I would just like to work with what I got.

thanks in advance.

If its just surface rust

1) Put hinge pin in a drill chuck
2) Use fine wet n dry sandpaper
3) finish off with 'autosol' or metal polish to smoothen things up

Be carefull with the sandpaper! If I'm not mistaken the pins are chrome plated and if you use aggressive sand paper you will eat right through. I would use Mothers brand mag wheel polish. Chuck the part in a drill like stated above and use a small amount of the polish on a soft towel. This will shine them up nicely!

goto home depot, look in the paint section for something called Naval Jelly.

it will destroy rust, its a pink gook, not a super harsh chemical which is nice, and will take the rust off any steel and not take off black oxiding either. good way to restore screws and tie rods

dremel wire brush is a good final resort too

I used a wire brush, and it went away, it was very light rust, same thing with the CVDs, just brushed it lightly and it took the rust away, as far as the pins, I just wiped them down, and they were good as new, thanks for the advice guys.

 noooo, I'm all about restoring, not replacing with new parts :D

I was thinking about that, but the price on ebay for a new set of the CVDs that i needed was $38 + shipping.
