I just obtained 2 new vintage speed controls. Both are Novak T4 Tempest. Anyone know what the motor limit is on these?

The T-4 and the Tempest are very different speed controls. Novak does have all their manual available on their website.

Sure, the manual says...
no limit!

Of course back in the day there were no nine-turn singles... I think scr8ps about right with the 15 turn limit. Mod motors were typically 17 turns with six or seven cells. Some of the 1/12th guys were running 13 triples or so, but with four cells, for eight minutes, with 1200mah batteries.
Might want to keep it within reason if you're gonna actually use it, or
toykilla might not be too far off the mark there...
No limit and entry level go hand in hand, right?

Ah, what does scr8p know ...
Novak not only has their manuals online, but if you post a question directly to their tech department they'll get back to you. I've always had good experiences with Novak and have even gotten them to participate in a few discussions as the need arises.

'In the days of old'- speedies weren't rated by turns of a motor but rather amp draw. The T4 was a lower spec when compared to its brother of the time. The T4 was rated at 179 amps while big brother T1 has a 276 amp capacity.
Im not sure how to convert this to turns on a motor but with the T4 you'd be safe with a modern day stock motor or maybe even a 19turn possibly. I have both of these esc's and plan to run them myself with CO27 stockies or maybe even a couple of period high turn modes around 17 odd turns. Check to see how hot the esc is getting as this will be a good indication wether you're esc is dealing with the amp draw.

The T4 has 16 gauge

wire and just wont give hotter motors the amps they want. the esc is made for entry level and a modified motor just wont be as fast as it could be.

The T4 is absolutely not a no-limit ESC. It's an entry level ESC. I know I ran a modified motor with one back in the day, but I can't remember how many turns it was, probably 15 or 17 turn double if I had to guess. I'd stick to stock motors if you're going to run it today, just to be on the safe side.
