That's funny, I thought after last year they'd make it a National Holiday!! Thanks though. I almost made it all day at work with no one realizing it, but then someone noticed on the company birthday calendar. My cover was blown...

No birthday would be complete without a dirty Limerick. You should appreciate this being a brewer. I was hoping to score a 6 pack of Longhorn Blonde from The RAM brewery for the occasion, but had no luck. I contacted them for a distributor in the area, but got nothing. The closest one is in Indy. I have a local distributor looking into it.

Correction, it's Big Horn Blonde. Maybe that's why I couldn't find it...

Bummer! That's part of the reason I took up brewing, because my pub started changing the recipe of my favorite pale ale. I couldn't drink it anymore and went on to some of their other brews, which again they started changing for the worse. I'm now drinking a Scotch ale which is a cross between a porter and a stout (sort of ... ). Anyway, I've got a heck of a clone for the original PA that I liked and have since crafted a pretty decent apple ale and dang good pumpkin ale. Next up is crafting a porter.

Since we're on the subject of beer, I did a batch of PA 10 days ago and put oak chunks into the boil and into the fermenter because I've been trying various oak barrel aged brews at the pub and I'm really liking the oaky essence in these brews. When I bottle it I'll taste the beer and see if I want to leave the oak chunks in the bottle or take them out. It should be ready to bottle any day now. <oh boy, oh boy, oh boy, oh boy>

My girlfriend buys me beer tshirts when she's off on business travel. She too is a microbrew lover so she's always checking out the local offerings of wherever she is. She's brought be two shirts from Big Horn Brewing in Puyallup WA. One says "Big Horn Blonde, all the body without the commitment", and the other is "Do you believe in love at first sight, or do I need to buy you another beer?" She got me a third from a company that dyes the shirt in beer (kind of a mustard yellow color ) and it says "will sell wife for beer*" the Asterisk denotes the terms of sale which are written on the back. The company that does this shirt, also does wine dyed and I think hemp dyed shirts.

Sounds pretty good. It would be pretty cool if you could leave the chunks in there. You'd save a lot of money on peanuts too. I tried homebrewing once and it ended in very bad beer and exploding bottles. No joke. I would imagine it takes a lot of patience and practice. Neither of which is my strong suit. I'll leave it to guys like you. Speaking of which, I'm cutting out early to go meet the wife and parents for that of which we speak. Thanks guys.

Brewing doesn't have to be difficult. The hardest part for me was coming up with a good recipe and knowing how to calculate the bitterness. Once you've got both of those, you're just going through the motions to make the beer. Your exploding bottles were likely from not being fully fermented and/or over primed (too much sugar added at bottling ). The bad beer can be from any number of things, primarily a bad recipe or poor sanitation are the two primary reasons.

It takes me 3 - 4 hours to do a brew from the moment I start pulling out the stuff to the time I'm cleaned up and out of the kitchen. It's about another hour at bottling time. The hardest part for me is waiting for it to be done and drinkable!

Just one last post. Halgar was talking about t-shirts and I get home and my wife bought me a new one. She knows I have a love for novelty Ts.
