Is there a big advantage to getting the ball bearing steering? I would imagine there might be for racing, but any gains for just back yard bashing?

Stock steering was very sloppy in my opinion. Adding a good rpm or houge steering setup with bearings takes the slop out of it.

very true but if your on a buget and just playin in the back yard the stock set up works fine..some of my rc10s use stock steering .i like to use a thin nut(like the nut some people use on the rear arm mount) on the 7/8 screws inplace of the washer .screw the chassis in all the way and then tighten the nut .i find that this keeps the chassis tight and you can keep your steering loose ..

The ball bearing steering is sturdier, and less slop. I would highly recommend it! I've seen RPM, and MIP BB steering set ups on eBay for around $20.
