Modern rear tires on a 5-link losi?

Post by aconsola »

Does anyone have any ideas as to how to get some modern rubber onto the rear of the jrx-2?
I have 2 pairs of 2.2" buggy rear wheels/tires that fit the axle and hub fine but rub on the shock mount and lower link.
I do not know what car they were intended to fit, but they do fit on my pro and pro-se just fine.
I would really like to be able to get blue-groove tires to fit the 5-link, otherwise I'll have to run an h-arm car at the nats

I can't remember if anyone makes any Yoke or Kyosho rear wheel adapters for the JR. That would bump out the rear track width if they did. If not, other wheels with a different offset would be your only shot.

i wonder how the electric evader rear rims would work. you could use the evader fronts on your jrx-2 without any issues.

out of curiosity, i tried a b4 rim on the back of mne to see if it would work, but it doesn't. even using the kranzels wheel spacers i have.

I believe you need XX rims, not XXX. As far as I know the XX rim is the same offset, or so close to I never noticed, as the JR rims. EDIT: They do appear to be a little different, but not much. XXX are different. Would be an issue even with the H arms, the rear track would be narrow messing up the handling.

Edit: I checked a hub with links against this rim, not assembled to car, but should work.
Bongo's money back satisfaction guarantee: If they don't work I will buy them from you.

Bonus, not your typical boring modern dish wheels.

Cheers! And good luck, go git them 10s! Just remember to keep that six gear diff tight.... :P Of course a retro xx tranny should be legal.... :?

B2/B3 rear wheels will rub, but the fronts are perfect. The Evader buggy rear wheels fit without problem. It is offset a little less, so it will widen the rear track slightly. Not that that is a bad thing. They are 2.2" wheels by the way. So are the evader fronts requiring metric or standard size bearings?

Ive just been through this very problem myself a couple of weeks back. I have used the Evader rims on the rear of my JRX2 with the 5-link. I was having a hard time getting the right offset and was thinking I'd have to redrill the stub axle to relocate the drive pin further out. Then I found some old retro fit XX / XXX driveshafts and the holes were already drilled out further. I quickly swapped the stub axles over and this sorted me right out. I think the XX rims are close and still you might be faced with the tyres rubbing. try a different rear stub and you'll see what I mean.

FYI... I purchased the 5 Star wheel for my JRX2. The rears work great. I was diappointed to find out that the fronts are a completely different mounting style. The have a star pattern on the inside and aren't made to hold the bearings. It's too bad, they would have looked so good together!

You have to run the xx blocks and carriers drilled out to 1/8 so the hinge pin will fit, then your car can run the xx all the way around I did it to almost all of my cars. here is my old pro se

hello Anthony,

The XX rear wheels will fit, but when the tires are on, they will not. The 2.2 tires extend about 1/8 an inch past the edge of the wheel. If you look at the standard 4 row 2.0 inch tire, they are almost flush with the edge of the wheel.

I tried a b2 wheel, but those stuck out quite a bit (wider)...this may change the handling of the car and may make it too wide.

There are a couple of modifications that you can try:

1. Space (1/4 inch) the rear links (the ones that the shocks mount to) inward. This should only be space at the rear hub...do not space at the side bulkhead. By doing this, you're able to gat a little bit more space between the rear shock mount and the face of the tire. The only problem with this is that it lowers the rear suspension and if spaced too much, the link may rub against the chassis.

2. Same as above, but use the RPM wide truck links (held in place by the belkhead and rear pivot block). By doing this, the suspension geometry will remain unchanged. To offset the increased width, you should use the XXX rear wheels to bring the car back to the original width.

hope this helps....

Regards,
Roger

what I wound up doing for the vonats was using a white 4-40 nylon nut to space the lower links inward. The wheels I used were I think XXX, but not 100% on that as I got them in with a bunch of used wheels.

I tried the car tonight with proline lightweight b2/b3 wheels and proline bowties (cheap tires available at the AE factory store on ebay) the width at the rear comes in at about 10.25" with stock suspension geometry and no axle spacers. plenty of tire clearance with these, even without any spacers for the links.

What is the max width supposed to be for a buggy? I suspect I am over it.

I bought some more wheels and played around a little.

I got a pair of b-4 wheels, these are very deeply offset in the rear. using a .125" wheel spacer puts the overall track width of the rear tires at just about 250mm, which is the upper limit for buggy width according to the ROAR rules online. I found an RCCA flyer/quick refrence guide from 1991 in with all my paperwork, and it says the same thing.
With the wheels setup like this the front inside of the tire rubs slightly on the shock mount at the link. I used a 4-40 nylon nut under the lower ball in the hub carrier to space the link inwards. This gives plenty of clearance, even when taking into account all the 5-ling slop.
I put a matching set of b-4 wheels up front with standard ribbed tires and it comes in at just under the 250mm. This should make it very easy to source wheels and tires as b-4 stuff is plentiful

so the final recipe is:
b-4 wheels all around
.125" wheel spacer
space lower link in 3/16" at rear hub carrier.

next job is to see how to get a lipo into the x2 chassis. :)
