Another re-re Frog racer.
I really like the modded Frogs that bngiles and germanrc10gt built, so I decided to try my hand at one. I did want to keep it mostly Tamiya, only using the CRP front bumper and shock mounts (and some of their hardware, sold separately... ) and a set of Pro-Line wheel outers I had laying around. I did order the Sand Viper 2.2" wheels to run current rubber on the track. The shocks are just Tamiya CVA units, but they are smooth and didn't come from China...
I added the CVD kit and the Dirt Tuned motor just because they're cool.
Here's how it looks so far:

Those black wheel covers are yelling for a military theme. UNO would be nice too.
Are you gonna colour the viper wheels' center black also somehow?

Re: Another re-re Frog racer.
I want to be able to see this car on the track, so no camo. Probably flourescent green and yellow...
The sand viper wheels are that ugly silver, I guess I could use some colored mylar but probably won't bother.

Oh, that's looking good temple. Nice and clean, a lean-mean-fighting-machine. All business, just my style. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Re: Another re-re Frog racer.
Neat-o! That thing will fly with that motor in it. Really need to fashion a rear swaybar and find a way to lower the ride height down to tame it down.
What springs are you using in front? I found that with the CRP conversion, you have to run super lightweight springs, with lightweight oils too.
Where did you find the CVD's? Are they Frog specific, or were they designed for a different car?
On the 2.2 wheels... There were some buggies Tamiya made with different color wheels, but they are on models that are now discontinued. Most of their newer 2wd buggies may work as long as they have bearings in the wheel and not in the front spindle. Kyosho RB5 would work if it wasn't for that.
Also, with the 2.2" tires, the "torque" gear ratio should be installed. I ran the "speed" at the vonats. Really too fast for the car. Hell, it was faster by far on the straight that my JRX... Swapped the next lower gear set in and still too fast with not enough punch on bottom at the end of the run. I think the torque set would work best for a brushed motor.
My 2 cents

Re: Another re-re Frog racer.
So far it's black AE front springs, although I did pick up a set of browns to shorten. For the rear I picked up some silver/red/green Losi buggy fronts. I hear you about ride height...although I'm going with NiMh so a bit heavier than Lipo.
The CVD kit is still available #53908, it's Frog specific.
I ordered some 51205/51206 Astral wheels direct from Tamiya USA for a bit of a different look, sort of a modern version of the original Jackman wheel:
They were originally for the DT02MS kit:
I also put the torque gear set in as well as smearing the diff spider gears with heavy Bel-Ray green grease...
It should be awesome. Of course the TRF decal sets are discontinued...

Re: Another re-re Frog racer.
I had the AE black springs on the front of mine and it was still too stiff. Browns obviously too long. Don't know where to go for lighter springs in a short length.

Bummer. Are you using the short CVA shock kit (50520)?templeofspeed wrote:Of course the TRF decal sets are discontinued...

Re: Another re-re Frog racer.
maybe you should look around in the mini-section: there's lots of reasonable priced hop up shocks for all kinds of 1/16 and 1/18 buggies (and trucks). The springs on those are lighter as the cars way less too.

Re: Another re-re Frog racer.
hi temple thumbs up, looks great.
i've been looking for a set of rear shocks that are not as stiff as the stock ones. pretty hard to get something decent.
i guess i have to get me some of these:
http://cgi.ebay.de/Alu-Stossdaempfer-75mm-2-Stueck-von-Ansmann-Racing_W0QQitemZ230251173321QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item230251173321&_trkparms=72%3A1229|39%3A1|66%3A2|65%3A12|240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
they are a perfect fit in color and length. i do know they are from china and i try to avoid everything that comes from this fxxx
nation but since the frog itself comes from china these days
