- Stars and stripes Project -
Hi guys and gals,
It's been quite a long time since I didn't start a new '10 project and needed a new shoot... So I started this project around a blue custom milled chassis I had laying around for a very long time. Well, here's it's weird and brief story: got it from a guy whose friend had to go to Irak when the sodding second Gulf war started there. He left all his stuff to a friend who sold the lot to me. According to me, this very chassis is one of the best examples of what should be done to lighten the good old tub without hampering it's vital functions. Sides have been carefully cut, chassis is nicely milled "à la World's" and the thing was then completely reanodized blue. The front kick-up is also milled but not custom anodized blue... Because the bottom of the chassis has quite some scratches, I didn't want to go and build a perfect shelf-queen with brand new parts. So I took a few random used parts left over from other unborn projects... The idea here is to build a hop-upped '10 with early period options, try to mock-up something that could have existed back in the day and try to only use non-NIP parts, sometimes refered to as "used-useable", lol. For now, the car looks a bit toyish with all those colours, but it's different from everything else I've seen and build and the colour combination immediately made me think of the stars and stripes banner, hence the name of the project. What you see below is only a temporary mock-up, details may change a bit during the true building process. Any comments or suggestions are pretty welcome!
(sorry for the crappy pictures, had very few spare time lately, I'll get better shots later)
The magic recipe for now:
- Custom milled chassis and front kick-up
- JG front bumper
- White Andy's front arms
- Rebuilt MIP tranny
- Early Hot Trick rear shock tower (2 holes for shock mounting, I have another version with 4 holes)
- Factory Works battery holder

I have a suggestion. Send me the rest of your "used/usable" parts.
That car looks great and you have done a fantastic job restoring the used parts. They look great. Love the chassis.

Used parts? I wish my used parts looked that good. What do your trashed parts look like? Yet another nice build David.

You parts must be made in Napa Valley

Yeah, I use to clean them with 19th century Californian wine, works good, but a bit hefty

Re: - Stars and stripes Project -
I took some after-working time yesterday to mount new Parma rod ends with Tecnacraft-like titanium turnbuckles. I also kind of mocked up the shocks, I still need to clean some parts like tranny brace (I really need a white one with 4 holes to stay period correct here), shocks, spur gear... I would also like to mount rear Hornet style rims, does anyone know if there is an adapter of some sort to mount Tamiya rear wheels to a '10
Here are some (still crappy) pics

Yes there are a number I believe. They used to be quite prevalent on ebay at one point, try CRP's shop or maybe email them as they let their stock out in dribs and drabs.Asso_man! wrote:I would also like to mount rear Hornet style rims, does anyone know if there is an adapter of some sort to mount Tamiya rear wheels to a '10

Re: - Stars and stripes Project -
David, if you have a set of Tamiya wheel ends, you can probably just drilled them out to match the taper of the AE axle and they will work fine. Both early Tamiya and AE share the dog pin drive, the only difference being the Tamiya axle has a constant OD/no taper.

Re: - Stars and stripes Project -
Yup, that's what I guessed, but I'm a real noob when it comes to Tamiya stuff. In fact I have Hornet wheels with black Pro-Line outer rims and would like to mount those on this project with matching fronts... I'll try to post a pic of the wheels later on this weekend...
PS: And at last some better pics whith turnbuckles added at the front end...

David, I found a set of the AE to Tamiya adaptors. Did you want to make your own or.....?
