RC10 Replica Project - My racer 20+ years ago

Post by Niki »

Hello All,
I competed a couple of years around 1990 with a really nice build of RC10 buggy. 1992 I sold it along some other nice cars to be able to buy a certain 1:1 car.
Over the years, I have often regretted selling it. After many years of RC-airplanes I finally returned to RC-cars. Now I have a couple of new and vintage ones. Still I "miss" that old RC10.
So finally I decided to do a replica of it. I found some old fotos but only with the body on. Not good for research.
Luckily I do remember quite well what it was made of.

Here is the original one right after a race. My guess year is 1990.

This is what I remember about the car and this will be my recipe.

Chassis: Graphite. Holes for saddle-pack type battery. Smooth front end side edges, no cuts or steps. Manufacturer unknown.
Transmission: 6-gear with dogbone axles.
Steering linkage: Similar to WorldsCar (bellcrank) with ball bearings. Manufacturer unknown.
Suspension arms: Andy's + titanium pins
Turnbuckles: Titanium. Old Lundsford type with big nut.
All plastic parts black.
Black motor mounting plate.
Body: Sidewinder #6161 (Yes, this can be hard to find)

I was going to add earlier that it looked like an early Horizon Hobby TQ10.

Welcome to the forum - Looking like a good start :)

if you aren't too hung up on getting a "genuine" sidewinder bod, you can get decently-prized repros :)

Yours rear wing might be CRP.

Welcome to the board!! You have certainly found the right place for help identifying (and finding) parts. Looks like a fun project.

It definitely looks like you had a TQ10. The main reason behind my conclusion is that it was the one and only RC10 with a 6-gear tranny AND a black motor plate. So unless you would have bought that motor plate separately, it can't be anything else than a TQ10. Believe me or not, I have one that I was planning to sell in teh next coming days, all the plastic parts were dyed black but are new, the chassis is in good shape with some scratches though and a few exra holes. I even think it also has the mod for the front stab bar.
The TQ10 is a bit of a UFO among all the other RC10 versions as it was never distributed by AE themselves but by Horizon Hobby.

Thanks for your answers.

Black motor plate was not the original. I bought it separately. Previous golden motor plate were cut by the former owner right behind motor. I wanted to protect my motor better probably after destroying one.

I found this on Ebay. Chassis and transmission are wrong but this will be my starting point. However a lot of right parts.
I will cut this to saddle-pack battery version if I do not find the right chassis. A lot of odd holes in it anyway.

What about the electronics... Yes... I do have the originals left !!!
I have tested them in a 1/12 pan car and everything works after almost 20 years of silence. Impressive !
