Mayor RC/NIXconcepts Carbon Fiber Rear/Mid Motor B3 Project

Post by MayorRC »

Introduction:

Mid motor has been "the thing" here in the PNW racing scene for the last few months. While it's awesome to see some innovation in the R/C industry, I still am not sold on most of the current kits. Having owned almost every "major brand" buggy that's been out in the last few years, I still fall back to my B3. It's got a ton of sentimental value and is a riot to drive. Honestly kind of fun to finish top 3 in a stock buggy a-main with a car I built 16 years ago....

This car is a collaborative effort of a few people. Niki, a member here on the forum, designed this carbon chassis. Through a few PM's, he gave me permission to make a few chassis of my own and give it a shot. I really like his design because it's wide open. There's no "battery trays" or anything that get in the way of some good old fashioned creativity.

Pat McFall, who does a ton of the engineering work on my real race cars, has came on board to help with testing and suspension.

And of course, me. A young, dumb individual who just wants to be different, and not have to have the latest car, the latest ESC, the latest motor, the latest battery, and a $1000 radio to be competitive. I just want to have fun! My real racing efforts are my focus so the R/C stuff is actually a relaxing and refreshing activity!

And now, on to the build. We start with a NIXconcepts chassis, cut for me by a good friend who used to produce conversion kits for the CRC pan cars. If enough interest, I can have a few more of these made. Niki has been super cool and is willing to let me cut his chassis for more people. This design lengthens the chassis to that of a B4.1 Worlds, so almost 20mm longer then the standard B3 chassis.

The Goal:
Build a competitive, easy to drive car that can easily be changed from Mid to Rear motor in less time then any other car. And have a crap-ton of fun doing it!

This is just fantastic.
Now one of my "RC10B2 (B3) Graphite" project goals have been accomplished when someone else is also making a project based on my chassis. It's true that flat chassis design is good for all kind of testings. I'm currently driving with a "B3-rear motor-saddle pack lipo" setup and I really like it. I will definitely follow this topic with a great interest. Thanks Kyle for trusting my design.

So do I! I'm waiting for a company called Shapeways to finish and ship me some parts I had them make based on Niki's design. They are supposed to ship Tomorrow, but I'm not sure where they're located. At that point it becomes time to start assembly :)

It took about/around 2 weeks to get the stuff I ordered from them shipped to Arizona. They are in the UK. :)

Finally received notification that my parts were being shipped from shapeways....Only took them about 3.5 weeks to make them.

Hoping to receive them this week! I'll be out of town for a few weeks for holidays, so this might be the last update for a bit!

Shapeways parts arrived just before I left for Christmas vacation....Absolutely cannot wait to get home from a few weeks away to start building. I mocked up the trans, motor, and servo in the car, looks like I'll have a ton of room to play around.

Appears most bodies will not fit due to the width and length of the chassis, but the Centro bodies look to be close.

Any updates with the build? I might be interested in a chassis if all goes well.
