weights and rod

Post by kaszal »

Does anyone have a workshop or access to tools to make this for me. It's two underchassis weights for my Procat? They'll also clamp the undertray uniformly so no more split lexan. Even better if they're 4mm and the holes are countersunk. Would need two.

Also looking for the following...

3mm diameter x 70mm HIGH TENSILE steel rod - with 5mm of M3 thread either end

Thanks

Rods machined in tool steel

Post by kaszal »

I could get the bolt pictured above machined in "tool steel" which is stronger than stainless. It will be the right length and be threaded only at the ends. It will be well strong when combined with my new motor plates and it won't bend in the middle of a race.

Usual problem with small batches is the cost. The best I've found so far is £5 each. I propose I sell them in pairs i.e. £10 for 2 rods plus postage. Good news the rod is a lot less complicated than making the motor plates. If 10 people buy a pair or rods (including me) it might be possible... or I could just keep replacing / bending the stainless allthread.

Anyone interested or got another idea?

Hi Luke,

I reckon that tool steel would be too brittle for the task at hand and will snap when subjected to sharp hits. It is stronger and stiffer than stainless but will not yield under loads. Not sure about your LHS but try to look for K&S stuff they may have some treaded rods for your needs. Alternatively, you will be surprise what they have in the helicopter and plane section. They seem to carry all the odd bits and bobs that we sometimes use. If you do not have any luck let me know I may find something here for you.

For the 'weight' you wish to fabricate...there is a company in the UK that make brass parts for RC cars. I cannot recall the name (Trish bits maybe) but they are in Oople. What you want is easy to make yourself by the looks of it... why not give it a go.

Thanks Chris

I understand the steel could be heat treated to make it tougher but that would cost a little more. I've been using S4203 from Robbe...

It will do but bends if it takes a hit e.g. from landing from a jump.

I guess LHS means local hardware store but what's K&S?

I'm trying a few companies for the weights. If I can't get them in metal then glass fibre or c.f. will do. The main purpose is to clamp the undertray and spread out the force so the screws don't split the plastic. We want to keep those rare shells in one piece!

By K&S i mean these guys,

By LHS i mean local hobby store

Oh ok if you just want to do that with the 'weights' you could try plastics like nylon for the purpose of clamping. Perhaps the type they use for cutting boards.
