cleaning an RC10 Graphite chassis with acetone - bad idea?

Post by oldskoolracer »

Hey guys, i've run across an RC10 Graphite and have pulled it apart for some cleaning. (That's right, my RC10 addiction has expanded to my 3rd RC10 in less than 2 weeks - for those of you counting at home. ) It's in what I'd call clean runner shape or perhaps a shelf queen for a less discerning member like myself.

A few questions:

1) WIll acetone damage the graphite? The prior owner slathered the chassis with stickers. Are there other, safer methods?
2) Would epoxying the non-original holes be a good thing or bad thing? I just don't want to unwittingly spoil a pretty cool chassis.
3) Which do you think I should race, the original RC10 graphite chassis or my aftermarket graphite chassis (which is in almost perfect shape), or neither? While I want to race one, I really don't want to upset the RC10 gods by spoiling something that others prize.

Your thoughts are appreciated.

Dan,
1.acetone will not harm the chassis. GooGone works pretty decent for sticker residue also if you have the patience. Other harsher cleaners shouldn't hurt it either but I'll let others state their experience here.
2.epoxy will help strengthen it back up and keep it from delaminating...make it 'purdier' too
3.Race 'em both. If they have any wear on them at all there are nicer shelfers out there to be had if you are into that thing...and don't worry about what others think...its your stuff so go have some fun with it :D *

I've used Goo Gone and OOPS! to clean a lot of my R/C stuff, including an AE graphite chassis.

good deal guys, i'll get to cleaning tonight. my wife does hair and nails, so acetone is readily available (as is the 10% peroxide I'm currently soaking my white parts in under the grow lights - it's actuallly 40% peroxide but i diluted it - didn't want to risk destroying the parts.)

thanks again,

Dan

What you SHOULD do is leave those nice pretty cars on the shelf where they belong!! Oh sorry, gotta go...my mom's calling me.
