RC10 Resistor Speed Control

Post by limestang »

I'm restoring a 6-gear RC10, and am using the resistor speed control. Everything is working, but the brakes. The buggy just coasts. It's been a very long time since I've setup an RC10 this way, but I seem to remember the motor acts as a brake when the positive and negative wires are shorted. Any suggestions on adjusting the wiper arm to engage the brakes?

As always - Thanks for your help!!!

I figured out the problem with the brakes not working. The resistor wiper arm was not fully reaching the brake bands of the resistor. It appears the resistor has 4 primary zones (brakes, low, medium and full power). The original resistor brackets were bent at 90 degree's, making it impossible to properly line up the wiper arm with the airtronics servo. To make it work, the original owner had bent the wiper arm way out, which didn't allow good contact during rotation. Since everything had to come apart to fix it, installed a completely new resistor, wiper, and bracket kit. This kit included brackets that were curved backwards, positioning the resistor further back, plus it had slots instead of holes allowing about 1/8" adjustment up/down and forward/back. After installing I carefully adjusted everything so the wiper hit as much of the resistor as possible during it's rotation. The brakes works well now. I recommend this project for anyone wanting to go old school. It will also make you really appreciate the vintage Novak/Tekin ESC's.
