Optima Mid Custom Special + Turbo Optima Mid Special
Finally I got these restore projects started. I have been collecting parts since may this year and I think I have all that's needed. As my other builds, these two cars will be built by using mostly second hand parts (in great condition).
Model names:
Kyosho Optima Mid Custom Special
Kyosho Turbo Optima Mid Special
These are the last two models Kyosho made in the Mid series. Both with the stretched wheelbase.
I will update this first post with more info but for now, let's have some pics!
Gear diffs for the custom, balls for the turbo special.
Not exactly correct chassis but the closest I could find.
Fibre-lyte substitute for the turbo special.
A "look-through" view of the drive trains.

Looks awesome... how big is your collection? Seems like every few months you have 1 or 2 new ones! You must do a "group picture" of everything.

I've actually lost count on how many cars I bought before the restore projects starteduniquenamehere wrote:Looks awesome... how big is your collection? Seems like every few months you have 1 or 2 new ones! You must do a "group picture" of everything.
Yes! I will take a few family photos when I got all six mid cars restored. Having the complete series is not that common I guess. Just got the info that I have some bodies and decals from Marwan waiting at my local post office
Thank you Lars!Hcp22 wrote:Nice Joppe

Thanks sheriff! I've sourced the original wheels and the tires for both cars. No worries matesheriff wrote:Great pics as always Joel, looking forward to watching the progress of these.

A bit of a build progress guys! I take fewer photos this time and have more focus on the builds. Love these models!
Rear suspension arms, belt protection and motor plate etc.
Another angle.
Spur gear and slipper mounted.
Front suspension arms.

Thanks! I've been lucky with some of the mids I bought on Ebay. Many parts have been in shape like new. Especially LWB models that have had under trays all their lifeireg wrote:Nice build and the parts are all look new

And... those lovely Golds are ON!
That will be all for today. Took a while to rebuild eight dampers...

Sweeeeet! The fitting of the gold shocks, a very gratifying part of a Mid build, especially when they like new, like yours!!
Superb work, as always

Very nice work there.
Add your excellent pic's rates your post among the best.
As well as I love Optima mids & have 2 runners. One that I raced back in 87 with a 2nd place in the biggest race in that state in mod. Funny it was the first MID with a Brimod ( UK company) LWB chassis conversion which was 10mm longer. A good yr before we saw a LWB Mid. Cost me a fortune back in 87.
My other 2 MIDS are customs. One under going a full rebuild with new ball diffs and tranny gears. The other is a shelfer.
Such a well built & fast 4wd.
Have you raced one? You have a true passion for Mid's
