New crawler body

Post by R Cane »

I was bored tonight, and decided that I'd paint an F150 Raptor body I got recently, and put it on one of my crawlers, since I didn't like the body that came with it.
I've never painted a body before, so I had no idea how long it would take, with drying time, etc. Turned out to be about 6 hours, most of it cutting the masks and dry time between coats of paint.
It's nothing fancy at all...just going to be my everyday runner/climber. It's going to get beat up, so no fancy details...just straightforward factory trim - more of a let's see how this painting thing goes. It's certainly not perfect, but I'm pretty happy with it for my first try.

That turned out really nice! I have that body too, but have not painted it yet. I like how you blacked out the windows on it. 8)

Thanks. Yeah, I didn't see any point in looking at the wires and such. The paint is not quite accurate, as on the real truck, the black trim is flat, not glossy. When I was a kid, I did hundreds of model kits...one of the cool things I had was a bottle of clear flat lacquer (and a bottle of super high gloss also). If I can find some of that, I may go over the black areas (except the windows) and correct the look.

Tamiya makes a Flat clear you could use to spray on the outside to dull those areas.

That Ford truck body looks great, R Cane! I think it's pretty realistic, the black trim and fender flares are nice details. 8)

To get a low-gloss black finish, I just sprayed Pactra Outlaw Black on the outside of the Lexan (I did this Barracuda hood & rear spoiler this way). I also painted black on the inside of the Lexan too so minor scratches (or the wrong teal paint color) wouldn't show through. Since Pactra bonds so well with Lexan, it should hold up pretty well even when sprayed on the outside.
