Re: Motor Collection - Old School Horsepower
ooooh yes. The wife used to have one like that in her family. Her uncle I think. I only ever saw it once, the same model but in blue.
She now has a very early Mk1 Mini - total opposite but so simplistically cool.
Now we're back on topic, kinda. Old School Horsepower

Re: Motor Collection - Old School Horsepower
I took a bit of time getting some pictures of the motors I still have, trying to work out which to put into each of my builds for display purposes. A lot of them are in amazing condition, which i am presuming is down to the predominantly mid-motored cars I was racing towards the end of my time on track. Those motors hanging out of the back of my Meteor and RC10 haven't lasted so well it seems. Many of my Team MG motors look barely used, but then they sent me replacements fairly regularly and I have pairs or three of each variety.laylow3down wrote: ↑Mon Nov 07, 2016 2:33 pm I remember some of those motors.. The B&R as mentioned above looks pretty good for starters.
Couple of Cobra Stocks.
My much prized '88 MG Brown Dot.
Pair of slightly later MG Red Dots - with red 'AYK Racing' stamped endbells too.
Two of my three Blue Label Red Dots - amazing condition these.
And then probably the most in-your-face examples, a pair of pink edition Red Dots ('93 season).
Considering they have been raced and then just been sat in storage for 25 years they are in amazingly good condition.
I am still after a pre-'88 (no date in circle) Brown Dot and Red Dot for my collection, as well as the seemingly elusive '89 dated Orange Dot.
There is also a very mint looking Trinity Horsepower standard motor, as well as a Parma K stock.
My other standards include a pair of SRM Scorchers; one is just a Scorcher, and the other is a Scorcher 'Plus'. Not quite sure what the difference is, more advance on the later 'Plus' edition maybe? These are basically Race Prep motors which were re-branded as their own by SRM Racing for the UK market.

Re: Motor Collection - Old School Horsepower
Next up, a few Demon motors. Anybody racing in the UK during the late 80's will instantly recognise these. Very distinctive can labels, cool as you like hanging out of the back of my Mardave Meteor when i was first starting out My Demon 27T standard motor was my first real motor purchase, and I still have it, looking rather worn and (motorspray) faded. Sat here with big brother, a 16 Triple.
I also recently picked up this 12 Double Demon Power King with a mint gold label. It was just too nice not to buy, and even came with a motor case.

Re: Motor Collection - Old School Horsepower
LRP - I have a Blue SE and a White E, complete with their original LRP tubs.
TMS Tornado 13 Double.
Schumacher Gold Nova 14 Double. Very nice looking, especially when mounted in a car. I quite like the Schumacher branding/logo.
This one is a Reedy Silver Dot, 21 Double - now this one i know i used a lot, and i have found it stripped down. Still have the armature for it, but boy was this quick bitd!!? I used to run it in my 2wd cars, Meteor in particular, and it could be geared very high, almost like a standard, and it was ballistic in a straight line. Curious that it is also showing Schumacher branding. Love this one, so i will service it and rebuild it.
And i posted this in my Pro Radiant thread a few days ago. I've been looking for a spurious Race Prep ceramic shaft motor for a while, and then this one popped up for sale so i nabbed it. Not arrived yet, but very very cool.

Re: Motor Collection - Old School Horsepower
Thanks - i am kind of just documenting them all really as there are a few here that even i had forgotten about until i dug them out again. There are also 5 other Reedy modifieds an MG Exterminator and two Revolutions.
I also had a Technigold and a Le Mans 240S, but they haven't surfaced as of yet....
When i get time i will photograph the others and post them up.

Re: Motor Collection - Old School Horsepower
Here's a few more.
Can't recall what wind this was, but i do know I also had a Revolution 17 Triple as well. Vague memory tells me this was a 15 Double 'Insane' or possibly a 15 Quad 'Mr Ed' though. It was a definitely a 15 something! Looks to have survived well anyway.
A few MG Exterminators of different winds.
Plus I also recently located and bought a very early MG Brown Dot example, the version without the gold cooling fins on the endbell. I'd been hunting for one of these for a while so i am really chuffed to finally get my hands on one

Re: Motor Collection - Old School Horsepower
The very last motor i purchased before 'retirement' appears to have been a Reedy Ultra Sonic 'S', which i do recall both purchasing and racing with in my very final race (qualified 2nd in the A Final, somewhere in Burton, UK). The motor is still in the car, so has literally just done one meeting and certainly looks pretty mint.
I still have the original packet it came in as well.
The Ultra Sonic 'S' was a 12 Double i believe.

Re: Motor Collection - Old School Horsepower
Regarding the early Revolution motor, there could be markings at the front of the motor and a color code at the endbell which could help identifying what wind it is. Most of my Revolution motors do have this but if it´s a 15T it´s most likely a Double wind.

Re: Motor Collection - Old School Horsepower
From memory I initially had a 17 turn Revolution motor - I still have the can but recall not being overly impressed with it. Back then a 16 triple was considered a hot spec with a 15turn motor being 'wild'... At some point I opted to go for a 15turn motor and that is what the Revolution motor with the gold fins on the end bell was. Barely used, like most of my motors. I will check it for any markings as you mention. Either way the condition is excellent.
