There are sets that have a very rounded tread profile and are quite narrow. And there are sets that have 3 or 4 ribs and have a square, wider profile.

I have several kits, all were MIB (until I opened and built some of them), and all but one kit...

I noticed that the older HPI wheels is roughly 1/16 inch narrower than the xx or rulux b4 rim, that is, the outside of the wheel fit just nicely inside the two outer bead flanges of the newer wheel. i doubt that would be an issue.
