Re: Motor Collection - Old School Horsepower
16 Triple has always been a favorite wind of mine. Back in the late 80's this was seen as a hot wind, with anything more that this being considered too much for the cells available to the mainstream driver. I ran a Demon 16Triple and it was awesome. Last year I was sent a batch of old motors which had been stored in a box in a garage and were in pretty rough shape. One was a complete but sad looking MG Magnum 16Triple.... However, it came from the legendary driver Ian Oddie, so I was hoping this might turn out to be a bit special. It looks a mess on the outside (understatement), although you can still make out the MAGNUM engraving, along with 16 Triple and Mick's signature. After a rebuild by Glyn Ward, it is back up and running

many motors are also from my race time from 85 - 89. We had MIH Master Blaster, Reedys and the great Demon like yours. The 16 turn with the 1200SC and 1200SCR was great.
With my Turbo Optima Mid and Demon Motors from Michael Kleinschmitt, the Germany Importeur for Demon Products. Please show us more pics. because memories!
At this winter I`m looking for a rebuild from my old 87 Mid with also the old RC-electronic stuff like Servo, Controller, Receiver, Battery and Transmitter, not easy to find this old stuff...

Yes, I do like the look of the old MRP motors. I have a 550 in the back of a carpet racing Meteor, and also have a 553 off being rebuilt at the minute.

Re: Motor Collection - Old School Horsepower
Here are a couple of beauties. The first is a brand spanking new 13Double Race Prep ceramic armature, and the second is a RacePrep ceramic armature which was wound by Mick Goddard of MG, that one being an 11Triple. MG sold their 'Super Magnum' through the summer of 1991 which utilized the ceramic armatures and also had red AYK endbells. I do have the rest of the Super Magnum so just need to put it back togther again - currently waiting on a service.

Re: Motor Collection - Old School Horsepower
Very nice looking lot. Oddly, my eyes are drawn to the MRPs in the middle.

Re: Motor Collection - Old School Horsepower
What were the benefits with the ceramic armature motors, were they the only ones?

Re: Motor Collection - Old School Horsepower
Pretty sure its because they were "straighter" than a metal shaft...less variances...and yes i think race prep only had them, pretty classic stuff

Re: Motor Collection - Old School Horsepower
RacePrep used and marketed the ceramic armatures - i believe they were supplied by AYK.
I do know RacePrep let other manufacturers use them as MG and SRM Racing over in the UK advertised and sold ceramic armature motors for a brief period in around 1990.
I have a couple of MG motors with them installed. The 'MG Super Magnum Eliminator' is a 13Double and has the red high fin AYK endbell. Incidentally they sold them with a Sagami can as per the Demon and LRP motors of the era, identified by the large square holes in the can base. I spent a long time trying to locate one of these as they were only sold by MG for a period of around 6months before reverting to the more normal metal shaft armatures; lots of issues with the ceramic arms snapping, as has been well documented. Awesome for the top drivers, but for club racing with multiple crashes they did not last very long. This example is pretty much perfect, label unmarked although the soldering certainly needs a tidy up!!
Advert from Feb '90:-
Advert from Nov '90, with the ceramic shaft withdrawn:-
Incidentally, their MG Red Dot from the 1990 season also used the same red AYK large fin endbell as I was sent a pair of them for that season.
I know AYK themselves sold a ceramic armature motor version at the same time, and using the same red endbell.
Not my motor but a pic i found elsewhere online.

Re: Motor Collection - Old School Horsepower
Nice MRP motors.
These are newer versions because their can is Mabuchi or Johnson.
Early MRP were based on Igarashi.

Re: Motor Collection - Old School Horsepower
Here's my 553, which fortunately still has a fairly tidy label.
