Mid-Six Spare Parts Project

Post by Russ Winn »

Well, the building itch has hit me again. I was going through my old parts box, and found I had almost everything to put together another RC10...I already have one, so I've decided to experiment. I picked up a sheet of 3mm G10 and using only the parts I have, build a mid-motor road car, much in the style of a drift chassis.

I'm pretty limited since I don't have a 3D printer, CNC, lathe or the knowledge to use them. All my fabrication was using a scroll saw, dremel and hand tools. All I'm really hoping for is a neutral-handling car to run on the street. Here's my initial progress, so far:
1.jpg
Paper template to lay out the chassis.
2.jpg
First cut with holes countersunk.
4.jpg
Initial suspension mounts.

I'm sure the purists here will cringe seeing this abomination, but building is why I got into the hobby in the first place...and being retired, my budget isn't what it used to be.
Updates as they happen!
The older I get, the faster I was.

Please. One of my cars looks like it was lightened with buckshot, like they were practicing for a Flex Seal commercial.

well, there's alot of enthusiast types on this board so let them cringe if they wanna. You think they'd cringe with your immaculate stuff I'd hate to see what they'd do with my stuff  by this point in the project it would have a 'plethora' of different colors

Thanks Juice and Klavy....I needed the laugh today  !!!

I managed to get a bit more done this evening. Since the chassis has no kickup, I used an old trick some people used back in the 80s, by shaving the stops out of the caster blocks and swapping sides. I found some RPM axle blocks (I have no idea what they fit) and filed them to fit. Also, fabricated a motor plate from 2mm G10 (That may change).

I decided to remake the motor plate because one of the screw mounts was a bit too close to the diff plate. This time, I went for a more "industrial look", instead trying to mimic a stock configuration...
8.jpg
After the motor mount, I cut a tower to use with short shocks, and got the rear end functional.
10.jpg
Finally, I got the bell crank mounted. I'll need to cut a shock tower for the front, because I widened the front stance by 1/2" over the stock width.

I didn't get as far as I wanted to today, but at least it's starting to take shape.

For your 6 gear transmission, are you doing the outdrive bearing mod?

Very nice setup you're making. Looks great!

Thank you so much! I don't know what bearing mod you're referring to. All I did was flip the top shaft so the motor spins the proper direction, and fabricated a motor plate to fit.

So far your build looks very nice, I'm a big fan of taking what you already have to the next level.
As to the bearing mod...
Pretty sure Frankentruck is referring to the outdrive bearing modification.
One of many references can be found here https://www.rc10talk.com/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=44362&p=503821&hilit=bearing+mod#p503821
Within the RC10 Buggy Forum enter bearing mod in the search box for several more threads.

Chuck - I just read your post that you linked to....Thank you so much for that! I was a little concerned about the play in mine. I'll have to see if I have one.

Here's today's progress... I got the front tower cut, mounted and all the steering linkage hooked up. The car has about 3/4" of ground clearance when all the running gear is in. Also, I got the battery tray built and installed. I used the poor man's method of balancing the car by standing a 3/8" socket extension upright and balancing the car on it. I kept shifting components around until I got it equal left/right. If I had to take a guess, it's about 60-65% rearward weight.

The BASIC car is complete! I got the electronics cleaned up and installed. Installed new bullet plugs on the ESC, and I shortened the servo wire (and found out age is catching up with me trying to see it  ). ....I haven't taken it out yet, but I did bench test everything. ...Next thing is to fabricate a bumper/body mount and install the body (also recycled).

What a nice build!
... and it appears to have taken you only 3 days to complete. My scratch builds normally take months to complete.

Well done sir. :D

I've completed the project today...Used an old RPM bumper that I heated and flattened out. The rear was cut from G10, but I may redesign it. I've accomplished the goal of building it entirely from parts, including the body. That was a bit of a trick getting the holes to line up with the mounts. I did have to open the rear wells a little, but at least there's no extra holes.
