Shim Front diff?

Post by Jools »

Stung into FOMOS (fear of missing out Schui) having just sold my 2 Procats, I've started to resurrect the partscat I put aside years ago. (The bits left over from the restos with a fabricated carbon/kevlar chassis and fabricated rear trans casing and plates).

It has the earlier front trans housing without the belt tension plate adjustment slots. I believe the method was to shim the trans casing to achieve good belt tension. (I did put aside a later housing, so I could rip it all apart and fit that though I dunno if I'd be able to use the existing bearings), But I'm curious to know how / where you would shim the front trans casing to get good tension?
Since I've 'been away', it's great to see that Schumacher have the re-re, so looks like plenty of parts are now available... hopefully the re-re parts will fit the original Procats. (Need to get upper front wishbones, wing/suspension mounts at minimum).

Well I'm in the process of fitting the later housing. But I'm still interested in the shimming location with a housing without the adjustment slot.
I am also wondering about the bearings, they swapped over fine, almost too easy, and I do wonder what's to stop the bearing outers spinning in the plastic housings, - there's not much 'fit'.
I've probably got the wrong end of the stick (said the actress) but anyway...

Hey jools pretty much everything from the re re procat will fit just the main chassis and rear gearbox housing have a different hole spacing.

I’d just get the procat rere front gearbox with the adjustment plate or even better the re re Ali front gearbox set I used it on my xls / bosscat runner.

Here’s the build thread

Well it's coming together (how nice to be building a Schui again!)
I had in stock (HTF did that happen!?) a correct later front trans casing so with that now fitted I can now adjust the belt tension.
Bitsa of course, -homemade carbon/Kevlar chassis plates, fabricated alloy rear diff housing plates and acrylic casings (ooh transparent- see those whizzing belts!)
Ready for a test drive, but it's too wet at the mo, but it goes... seemingly nicely -the cat will affirm that.
Next - an order to Schumacher to get a few parts (re-re- great! some parts I could not get 'back in the day - but better now hopefully) - def' front upper wishbones, I probably will splash out on a new body kit, plus rear susp/wing mount.
I hope unzud Craig enjoys my 2 Procats (in the mail), sad to part with those, but I feel very lucky to have got the parts together years ago to build this ol' bitza.

Well that’s different for sure. Never seen anyone use the cougar steering levers on a cat before

Would love to see more pics👍🏼

If you're still wondering about the early front housing adjustment there were no shims. You just had to loosen the 8 screws that attach the top and bottom chassis plates at the front, move the housing to tighten/loosen the front belt, then tighten the 8 screws back down. Kinda silly but it did the trick.

Right that makes sense Choco- (though it's a bit of a 'klutzy' solution compared with other pretty sophisticated Schui engineering solutions eh?)
Yes Retro... as I said it's very much a bitsa! Made from all sorts of miscellaneous parts left over from 2 Procat and 2 Cougar restos plus a fair bit of fabrication.
Seems to work though, mind you I haven't used it 'in anger' yet.

Any updates on this one? How did it run? Cougar steering work out ok? Did you add a belt cover or run it exposed? With my luck I would not get very far with an exposed belt.
