Here’s a short video of the issue

servo isn’t necessarily the problem, there’s just so much play. Thanks for the help all.

And here’s one with using the servo and having it stick

looking at the input arm for the servo saver, it does not look to be returning to the same spot after being turned left and right, so my checks would be at the servo (worn case/gear, etc) and at the ball joints connecting the servo arm to the servo saver. The tolerances were never all that tight, but that does seem excessive.
If the arm did come back to the same spot each time I would be checking from the servo saver output to the wheels.
Just to be sure I would pop off the servo link and make certain the entire steering system is silky smooth. If you have ANY binding in moving it by hand, your servo will too. Pop off one link at a time until you find the sticky.
It's time to stand up to the bully. Support the companies that support the industry, not the ones that tear it down. Say no to Traxxas

I think I got this sorted finally. Rebuilt the steering accirdjng to the manual (and discovered I had way too much negative camber along the way).

It didn’t feel stuck when I was moving the turnbuckles manually, but one of the kingpins had a deep gouge in it. It took an hour to get out!

Filed the gouge smooth, cleaned everything including the servo saver, and put it back together. Ran well today with just a tad bit of wander, but that seems to be from the slack in all the steering components - it never was very direct if I remember right.

Thanks for the help all!

Been enjoying the DS - perhaps a bit too much as I’m chewing through the original rear Road Hawgs.

I’m considering a hex conversion to open up my tire options. I’ve seen the detailed conversions, and may go that route eventually, but has anyone tried this rudimentary product on the DS?

Those type of kits are fairly poor quality. Except for a shelf car, they are near useless.

The rear hex is simple enough. You just need the hex that fits your axles.

For the front, I'd probably look at the Custom Works kit. It fits with little modification.

Traxxas Bandit parts have also been used on some RC10 models but I haven't tried a DS. The caster blocks might be too bulky for the smaller wheels.
Always looking for new and interesting ways to waste money.

I have heard the the tamiya F1 tires may fit the original rims. There are a number of ways to fit hexes to the DS and they cost similar to what you found.
