My Childhood Blackfoot

Post by Mwildmann »

I've mentioned this a couple times in other threads but, my brother had been storing my childhood Blackfoot for the last 20 years or so and I just found out he had it about a year ago. Got it back from him last Thanksgiving and went over it to figure out what it needed and a significant portion of my Christmas list ended up being the parts needed to get it running again.

It came back to me in sad sad sad shape, we were not nice to it. It was barely a roller, broken body posts, broken front bumper, missing a rear shock, multiple chassis repairs (that are suprisingly strong), beat body, broken roll bar and Daylighters and tires as hard as concrete.

As for upgrades, I got a set of cheapo ball bearings from Amazon, a Tamiya Super Stock RZ motor. Hobbywing 1060 ESC, same knock-off Spektrum-compatible receiver I use everywhere, centered steering servo mod, stainless steel turnbuckles from EspritTech (4-40, 2.5" long that I had to shorten a tiny bit) and Super Blackfoot tires.

The wheels are original Proline upgrade wheels from back then that I dyed black. Obviously, the shocks are also original upgrade shocks that got rebuilt. It also had most of the available transmission/rear drive upgrade parts from Thorpe that I got as a kid (ball diff, dog bone upgrade, aluminum wheel adapters). I had forgotten how cool the machined aluminum wheel adapters were!

For repair parts I used 3D printed body mounts from EBay, front bumper, rollbar and Daylighters from a re-release kit. Also replaced the rod ends and steering balls with NOS parts. I don't know how many of you saw but I also posted a question in the RC10 forum asking about the dimensions of B4 springs that I thought I could use on the front shocks. I ended up shortening the red Traxxas springs that I already had and they're ok, not great but good enough. Luckily, the motor mount was sloppy enough that I could install a 12-tooth pinion in place of the original 11-tooth. I may pop on an adjustable motor mount for it and get the pinion mesh 100% correct.

Other than the new roll bar and lights, the body got cleaned and left alone.

Here's how she started and ended up.
