The tranny will depend on the motor you decide to run in it. I ran my Ultima Pro stock at the vonats. Running the 17.5 motor with the stock spur (It had the 42 pitch spur) and the largest 42 pitch pinion I could find, which was a 25T. Speed was on par with everyone else, and on power traction was plentiful, even w/o a slipper. If you go with a hotter wind motor, it may be a handful. I would say save your money and use the stock gears.

Sounds like there's a good consensus for leaving well enough alone. I suppose that's what I'll do, no since redesigning if something works  Now, anyone got a cluster gear laying around collecting dust? My donor car was missing it, and I think the trade parts lot I am looking at is too. Has anyone tried using the frog cluster gear? The small drive gear of it is 18t like the Ultima cluster, and you'd have a choice of spurs, 49,50,52, right? Might have to come up with a shaft though..

By the way what are the bearing sizes for the bottom end 8x14 or 8x15? I don't have a manual, just measured myself. I know that the others are 5x10. 5x10 in rear hubs. What about the cluster shaft (if I use stock gear)? Omit the front, I've got that covered with RC10/B3 caster blocks and std bearings.

So my trade is made. Turns out that part of the lot that I was getting was an Ultima Pro - (should have known from the towers  ). So guess what surprise was lurking in the tranny? A Ball Diff of course!! Thanks for the trade Vintage88!!!

Also, is this a common issue on the Ultima series?

You might try calling Kyosho USA and see if they have any of the gearsets left in stock. Last time I checked they did. Among a handful of other old Ultima parts.

Brandon, I don't have a manual and the forum search for one is not helping too much. What is the part number for the gear set? UM... Thanks.

Took the diff apart today, when I reassemble, which side should the diff screw head be on? AND, I should be using loctite on it, right? (It threads directly into the metal outdrive.)

My final pinion (top gear) seems pretty bright (colorwise), therefore is it not the hardened one?

Should I assemble with the outrage topshaft/plastic top gear or the aluminum top gear/std topshaft?

Thanks everyone!

Turbo Ultima manual:

Ultima Pro manual:

As far as I know, the shinier final pinion gear is more likely the standard soft aluminum gear.

a new front bulkhead is easy to get at tower hobbies: look for the duratrax ST parts

Thanks, Mr. Ed! I was aware that several ST15 parts can substitute on the Ultima, Now that I have two donor car Outrages, I may get some of the tower towers  and build a trick Outrage or another Ultima when this one's done.

I put the diff back together today using Losi Diff Lubes. White grease on the thrust bearing, and Silicone on the balls and rings. Also cleaned and oiled the internal tranny bearings. It's spinning smoothly now!

Looking for a freebie upper deck if anyone's got one

When JayDub says throw a stealth in it and be done - will a RC10 stealth fit into an Ultima or am I misunderstanding?

well, it's not plug and play: you'll have to work a bit on it. The mounting holes in the chassis don't line up for example. I also believe the outdrives of the stealth are on a different level and more important: quite a bit narrower. This could lead to dogbones falling out when the suspensions travels down. In other words; better check it out carefully before you buy a stealth for this.

Rangerg- Mr. Ed is right, and believe me, you can take his advice. He's done almost everything that can be done as far as adapting, re-engineering and redesigning RC cars go. If you want a more modern tranny in an Ultima, better get a LW or a Triumph one. Be warned about the Triumph though, I think that the spurs are unique! A pro-x tranny drops right in too, although I've heard that the tranny case has a bad habit of melting.

I've decided to just get everything out of the stock tranny that I can, upgrade it when hop-ups are available, and adapt something different later down the road only if I NEED to.
