The earliest red shocks were 8mm on the outside but were only a 6mm bore. TS/Ultima/Optima red shocks were 8mm bore and the Kyosho Golds and Platinums shocks were 10mm bore...like the RC10 shocks. Then you got the Big Pressure shocks from the Burns which were 12mm like many modern "big bore" shocks.

Update -
I spotted some rear tires last week. I thought they´d fit this thing well.
Problem was the rims - and in general, the clearence between the bottom of the shock and the tire wall.

Fitted the tires to Hornet wheels and went from there. New axles made out of "Graupner/Hilti truck" dogbones.
Had no other 6 mm axle steel.
Mounted the corded 30 yo drill in the vise (poor man´s lathe) and went beserk with the file.

While I was at it with all that engineering, I made a new set of swivels for the front wheels. I had some Tamiya ones fitted to be able to mount proline front wheels, but the arm rubbed against the tire wall on the new front wheels I had planned.
So I took the original ones and drilled to them accept a 5mm shaft.

The new front wheels are a mix of XR311 tires and Hornet front wheels.

This is a cool project. I like the simple paint job and the color combo. Looks old school, nice work.

Looks great! The kyosho sticker didn't repel away from the body either i see. Very cool that the two can co-exist

Nice build Dennis, love the front end and the CB 88 shocks for the rear. Just curious about the front shocks, what are they, I mean the polished ones you have in the latter picture. Could you post a closeup of it, I just love shocks and am very curious to find out what you got there!

i have ishipla monster buggy shocks on mine. The fronts are 8mm and the rears 10mm, a nice balance. Recently I have rebuilt them from the ground up - added new rod ends with pistons (had to be cut down to size), bored and added brass bushings on the bottom o-ring retainer. Now it functions very well. I goota get my hands on those CB 88s!

Thanks for the kind words, Ron.
The shocks used in the front are Kyosho gallop MKI´s.
They use the same red spring clamp and retainers as the red 10mm Optima/Ultima shocks.
The clamps I´ve used, was something I received on an Optima, don´t know if they´re old or new.

I´ve got a Scorpion with Ishipla shocks, they look cool, but mine hasn´t been rebuilt so You´ll have to give them a days warning before compressing them :D

Let me know if You still need a close up picture.

Oh, yes I know the gallop shocks, so you have removed all the anodizing? I like the plain look. Silver and black go well together. This is how my shocks are, the shock is polished aluminum and the springs are black. I very much like the ishipla shocks, scale wise it is PERFECT with the kyosho chassis, right diameter. the fronts are 8mm and the rears are 10mm. And most important it has thread screw adjustment, thats why I bid and got them from ebay from Micheal, now we are very good friends sharing ideas and designs. The ishiplas are a looker but performance wise they are no good, They have the same internal design as the kyosho scorpion shocks but are not that well functioning, have looser tolerance. I fixed all that though, now they are very smooth and responsive!

Thanks but now I know what shocks you got on. Any vintage stuff works, man, they are all very desirable.

The Gallop MKI has non anodized aluminum shocks, just like the 8mm Scorpion shocks - so it´s an easy polish :D
I´m still looking for a solution on the rear spring clamps and retainers. I´d like them i alu, but not the grub screw style.

Do You have pictures of Your build here - I couldn´t find them?
