My Kyosho Assault

Here's a few shots of my Kyosho Assault. It's a new build that I completed last year. I'd had the kit for some time after bagging it from a collector in Japan, but when I came to build it the screw pack was missing. By some small miracle I managed to find another one, and got it put together. As a 'shelfer' I didn't fill the shocks with oil, but everything else was built by the book. It's definately a favourite in my small collection.

I've not driven one, but I reckon it would need spiked front tyres and some lead weight up front.

I love this thing because it is so crazy and old-school.

Red shocks that barely work, no suspension travel, and *that engine configuration* ...

... to me, this car has always looked a bit like an Ultima in the middle of pooping a nitro motor.

It is a great piece of history, and a nice looking build.

My friend had one back in the day, so I remember driving it. It was insanely fast, almost too fast for the chassis. It was also loud and it was really back heavy. The front wheels would pop up if you floored it. I remember driving it with friends just bashing around with a Fox, Optima, and a Big Bear. The Assault would steal the show in that it just attracted attention (again, loud). Fun car, but with the speed and the chassis you had to repair it often when bashing (or at least my friend did). The Kyosho cars were fast and fun, but high maintenance compared to the Tamiya and Marui ones. My friend and I spent time working on the Assault and me lengthening the Optima chain, while our buddies with the Fox and Big Bear were out driving around .

When I built this one there were a number of things that shocked me.

1. It's literally put together with nuts and bolts 'everywhere'. I imagine if you didn't use decent thread lock (which I did meticulously) then when running it I could imagine it would fall apart pretty quickly.

2. It's very light. Probably due to the fact that the whole chassis is simply made up from a few bars of aluminium. Even with some added weight in the front, it would probably still be really quick off the mark.

3. The design could've been greatly improved very simply by moving the fuel tank from the rear, to the space just behind the front shock towers. Then move the engine forward to run it sideways, underneath the main roll-over bar.

If it was not such a rare model, and if parts were still readily available, I'd love to have a crack at modifying one. I think it could be a really competitive design with some modern componants and a bit of a switch-around!

I had one way back in the day and ran that car alot. Yoiu are correct about the screws, I lost more screws out of that car than you can imagine.

The car ran pretty good but I had problems jumping. The rear would always hit the ground first and kill the motor. I was a kid at the time and that is what killed me liking the car. I eventually went with electric because of the issues I had with the assault.

That is a good looking build, maybe one day I will pick one up just to have.

I always liked the Assault; it just looked wicked, like an angry hornet...no, not the Tamiya one. And probably sounded like one too, with the nitro motor.
