Cox (Kyosho) Bandido project

Post by markbt73 »

I put this here instead of "other" because it's a badge-engineered Kyosho Pegasus with some red parts. Hope that makes sense...

Anyway, I have always liked these Kyosho "flexy-arm" buggies, so when the opportunity came up to trade a disused Tamiya Fire Dragon for one, I jumped on it.

What I got was actually almost two cars:
Image

Including one original working Cox Cadet radio system, one broken Airtronics SR2, two sets of wheels and tires, a Novak 4 ESC that kinda-sorta works, and an extra tub, transmission, front clip, and suspension arms. One set of tires is almost new, and one front bumper actually is new, and there's a good enough one of everything to make one really decent car.

Here's the rolling chassis after a teardown, cleaning, and rebuild, with a full set of bearings:

Image

The tires that are on it are going to be used for running, and the nice ones will get raised white letters (and maybe silver wheels, since the plastic is yellowed) for the shelf. It's now up and running, with a Duratrax ESC and a Tamiya Sport-Tuned motor. Very fun little car to drive. Body is a work-in-progress; the original paint is coming off nicely with brake fluid, but it's so oddly shaped that it's taking forever to get paint out of all the nooks and crannies. But it's in good shape, with no cracks, so it should repaint well.

I know, I know; restoring one of these is kind of like restoring a Plymouth Horizon, but I don't care. I like it.

I think its a worthwhile project :) . I'd go for the Kyosho Cosmo body though. Check this runner out:

There's other pics in that thread elsewhere, but I wasn't going through the 100+ pages right now....

Yeah, I'll probably get a Cosmo repro body eventually. Too bad nobody makes a repro Icarus rollcage, though... Thanks for the link to those photos. Love seeing the old cars in action.

The old Bandido body turned out ok for a runner. Ended up painting it on the otuside, and made some simple decals out of sign vinyl. Now I need to find or make a wing.

Well, that turned out pretty good for a cheap quick little project...

I used the "rubber stamp" method of painting the tire lettering:

Glad to see some interest in the old Bandido.

Besty and I own a couple of these and while they may not be quite the serious race car, they certainly are fun down the beach.

It turned out very nice - especially with the parade wheels on.

Very nice Bandido! What did you paint the wheels with?

Thanks for the compliments! Yeah, I was surprised by how well it goes. Much more stable than a Hornet, and probably just as quick.

The paint for the wheels is Krylon chrome silver, comes in a tall skinny rattle can. It's more of a satin than a shiny chrome, but it looks better than regular old silver paint. I used it on a set of old Blackfoot wheels and they came out looking like poor man's Sees.

That turned out very nice.
Can't believe how good the rims look.
I will have to give it a try on some Scorpion rims.
Great job!

Nice Bandidos. You did a really nice job on the painting and the restoration .
I really like the lettering method too. I think I might have to do that to mine.
I own two of these . One for the beach running a brushless as seen in the videos.
I have a box art shelfer which is new built also.
You can buy the rear wing from team blue groove .
I also have a Kyosho Pegasus which is basically the same car just in different colours with a different shell.
The Cosmo on rctech is mine also. It has a different front end and alloy shocks.
Its a much better handling car , the pics in rctech are from last years plastic fantastic class.

Yep, I have been into this particular car since I was a kid. Besty and I have used ours on the beach a few times and they are in their element there.

I've had this advertisment clipping since i was a very young teen.
