RESTO MOD - RC10DS / 69 Camaro Z28
Hello all,
Im new to the forum and i am an Associated RC10GT fan. I still have my first RC10GT so it comes as no surprise that I recently got into the RC10NDS as it was derived from the GT. I enjoy seeing the DS's on this forum and love the variations so i decided to post mine. I managed to score a really clean and almost new DS through a friend with eagle eyes. I also scored one from Canada in an auction which is the one this thread is about.
I got the Canadian car as a back or "CAR FOR PARTS" to support the first near new DS. The Canadian DS was in good condition but needed some repair on the tranny. I happen to score a tranny at auction as a backup but then decided to give the "CAR FOR PARTS" a new lease on life. Of course being that the DS is a vintage parking lot racer i decided to give it an old school muscle look but with modern day wheel & tire combo courtesy of a now discontinued Pro-Line item.
The Beginning:
a great platform to start with.
The Tear Down:
Replacements:
Bushings Out; Ball Bearings IN
Plastic Rear Bulk Head Out; Open Aluminum Bulk Head In
Tranny Out; Reconditioned and Buttery Smooth Tranny In
New Powerplant for the DS - Traxxas .15 pull start
The DS tires are hard to find and there are no support tires so i decided to use Pro-Line's SC10 Front inboard hub adapter. This item is discontinued but im glad i had a spare. This allows me to use 26mm HPI wheels and modern day rubber.
Modern wheels and rubber
Deep Dish Rear
So in a nut shell...
I got this:
I cleaned up and got this far
Let me know what you guys think.

Very nice
That's an HPI camaro body, right? Can you please check the width for me? I have a DS (with stock wheels) and I'm struggling to find the right body fit...
thank you!

The body is a HPI 69 Camaro and is 200mm in width. The only thing i had to do was shorten the wheel base of the DS. I used the spacer located on the outer edge of the rear arm and RPM zero degree mounts. This combo got the wheelbase to where it was needed.
Here are a few past pics of the original DS wheels.
Here is one with a 200mm HPI mustang body.
Hope this helps with your DS Paul...keep me posted

Thanks! I will post some GT stuff soon but decided to start with the DS.justinspeed79 wrote:Welcome to the forum fellow gt fan.

I update the DS's front wheel hubs so i can use modern wheels and tires as an email to Pro-Line asking if perhaps they would consider re-releasing the DS specific tire proved fruitless.
They dont have enough demand to justify a re-release so that leaves all DS owners with dry rotted originals.
Unfortunately they discontinued the Pro-Line hub adapter as well.
Either way....Im having much fun with the DS...its just like having a GT...HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAA

Thanks Todd buddy...Not sure why the DS bug got me, must be the GT heritage....romulus22 wrote:Looking good Alex. All three of them
Im not a fan of electric vehicles as you know (except of course for the crawlers) but i had to get an electric version of the DS. It is so damn smooth and quiet...i had forgotten how quiet 48 pitch gears are when compared to 32 pitch like the crawlers use.
All i wanted to do was go outside and run it....but not just yet...i need a cool body to represent such a cool little car.
Will post pics once i work on the bodies for the other two cars.

Thanks mate - helpful. I love the original DS wheels, and I have a set of NIP ones for when I find the right body... currently my DS has a 200mm body too and some (older, but original) wheels and tires and indeed the body is missing a good 10mm of width to clear the tires, which is a shame.
Still looking
Thanks!
Paul

I hear you on the wheels...i think the original DS wheels are awesome and understand why you'd want to keep them. The only thing holding you back is a proper body huh?Lonestar wrote:

Here are a few pics i just took before heading to work to see if it helps you out.
I placed the camaro body on the DS. The rear was placed very very gently on the tires so the body wont spread wide open.
When i get back home i will try it with the 200mm '05 Mustang body and post those pics.

Hey Romulus...i agree...those little Pro-Line were just the right size and width. Too bad Pro-line stopped making them and wont re-release them.
When i emailed them with the idea of a retro re-release on them they said no since there is no demand despite me mentioning DS enthusiast are dying to get there hands on them.
I wish every DS owner emailed Pro-Line and ask them to re-release DS specific tires...maybe i should start an on-line petition or something.
I figure everyone would want to restore their DS to its former glory with original wheels and tires, i know i sure as hell would.
PRO-LINE....I HOPE YOU ARE LISTENING!!!
