Got Power?

Post by Halgar »

Hi guys, just getting back online after 36 hours without power. Went out about 8am Friday morning and didn't come back until 8pm Saturday night. NorCal got slammed by a big storm with high winds that took out a bunch of trees and powerlines. We drove around a little to survey the aftermath and found all kinds of blocked roadways from tree and powerlines. One spot the tree was smoldering on the line and 10' higher it was on fire. Thankfully, all the levees and waterways held, so other than surface flooding from the 3"+ of rain, there was no prolonged damage/problems. On a positive note, our water heater and stove are gas, so we weren't without necessities. We borrowed a generator from a friend and fired up the heat too.

My condolences to anyone hit that had worse problems than we did here.

Oh, boo hoo.

Sorry, I'm an ex-Califorrnian. 160 mph winds in the Sierras sound pretty awesome, but until the general populace gets swept off the map and houses are $<100k I'm staying in the midwest. I really want to move back to the San Jose bay area, but it's still too pricey for me.

Sorry for any loss on your part.

Now you can use the new wood chipper to grind up the fallen branches!

Glad everyone's alright.

You'll be waiting a while if you think you'll be coming back to CA from the midwest with enough cash to buy in the SJ area!  :D I've got lot's of friends who are trying to get me to move eastward, but if I'm leaving CA, it's for a much warmer and even climate than what the midwest can offer. I personally suffered no loss, thankfully. This neighborhood faired pretty well as far as property loss goes, though I know of a particular Ford owner who's hating life right about now (tree snapped off and crushed the canopy and box on their truck ). As of 8pm last night both 80 and 50 were shut down in both directions. I'm sure they reopened today for at least a while.

LMAO!!!! I didn't think anyone listened to my ramblings! LOL   8) We didn't get anything to crank up the chipper on, but a few of the nearby neighbors did. Within 3 blocks a oak tree was laying over the telephone lines and blocking the whole street. A pine tree took out a power line and blocked a street and another tree and line was blocking an intersection. I talked to a worker today and he still sees a number of residence without power until Tuesday or Wednesday - almost a week in total. We were pretty fortunate in that we have a gas waterheater, furnace, and stove, so we were never without necessities. Our furnace does need electric to run, but with a bit of ingenuity and a generator, we had heat yesterday afternoon. It was only in the 50's by day, so not too uncomfortable during the outage, but it was nice to have a bit of warmth. 8)

When I saw the 160 mph winds on TV, I thought it was a typo

And people around here freak when a Cat 3 hits.

Glad to hear all is well.
He's an idiot. Comes from upbringing. His parents are probably idiots too.

Being without power for the day of and following the big hit, we don't really know what the rest of the city was going through. I do know that there was not flooding other than topical. There were a few pretty major traffic issues - big rigs toppling in the wind. The power outages were mainly due to trees falling on lines, which have mostly been restored now. This is for my city, I don't know much about surrounding communities.

Comes from being in the biz. Technical terms and layman's terms aren't always the same. I can interpret if you like.
