Canadian vintage lover

Post by Grunger73 »

Merry Christmas All,

Just wanted to leave some info here so that I'm not a total stranger.
I'm a middle aged male who saved up and bought his first "Hobby Grade" rc back in 1987. The Tamiya Hot Shot. I used it only for bashing with/against my best friends Tamiya Blackfoot. A few years later he bought a beautiful Kyosho Turbo Optima with all the Option House accessories. Not to be outdone , I went out and purchased a used but well maintained Schumacher CAT XLS and a brand new Losi JRX2. Fast forward, a few years and a lot of RC fun ,to 1996. In December of '96 I ended up in an unfortunate accident that left me paralyzed from the upper chest down. To make a long story short, things got expensive and the rc's had to go.

I have slowly managed to buy some more cars over the last few years. I even managed to get my own JRX2 back and with the help of my friends hands have managed to restore it. My current project is the CAT XLS. I found a beat up chassis on eBay (no rear end ie. Diff arms wheels wing etc). I'm slowly collecting the parts as I can find them

Even though I have a hard time driving them due to limited arm and hand movement I still get great pleasure out of these cars. Just looking at them on the shelf brings a smile to my face.

Shawn

Welcome to the forum, Grunger. What I liked about your blurb is that you and your friend had a nice variety of RC brands represented in your RC history...Tamiya, Kyosho, Schumacher, Losi...but rather strangely, no AE...what'up with that?
Completed projects: CYANide Onroad Optima | Zebra Gold Optima | Barney Optima | OptiMutt RWD Mid
Gallery - Coel's Stalls: Marui Galaxy & Shogun Resto-Mods | FrankenBuff AYK Buffalo | 1987 Buick GNX RC12L3

Funny that you should mention AE. The same friend had a next door neighbor who started out with a Tamiya Frog. His very next car was the RC10. IIRC it was probably the summer after I bought my Hot Shot. The neighbour was a lot older than us so we didn't get to see the RC10 all that often. Only once in a while would we see it flying down the road, probably just testing out changes that he had made.

Like, welcome hose head!

Nice to see another Canuck here - there is so much info here that you'll find after awhile your wallet will have lightened considerably because you 'just can't help yourself'.

Look around and read the threads on the various vehicles from your youth. You'll be amazed at the creativity and depth of knowledge here on just about anything vintage.
