Vintage racing re-releases. Rc10 vs the rest

Post by mAdMan »

I recently built a Kyosho Scorpion and I am very impressed with the scale, quality, and realism.

Let's talk re-releases. Tamiya has like 30, but Tamiya makes plastic body backyard bashing toys not really meant for racing. The metal parts are all still made of cast aluminum. Better be careful! How would the frog do against a rc10 on modern tracks?

Kyosho has re-released 4 I think. Their kits have been upgraded with forged 6061 aluminum! The design is still late 70s VW swing axle but with the new transmission I am really wondering how this Scorpion would do against a RC10 worlds re-release on a track?

Associated makes 1, the RC10 worlds re-release. It's the best obviously, but would a good driver with a scorpion be able to keep up?

Any insight here? They are cool to look at but should I bother trying to see if late 70s suspension technology will even work on modern tracks?

Short answer is NO -
AE´s first "re-release" was the Classic with the 6 gear tranny and if You took the same driver, same electrical gear and equal final gear ratio, pinion included, he´d lap faster with the Classic.

But if You gave me a B5 and gave a skilled driver the Scorpion, the Scorpion would lap faster than the B5

for a frog if you had a Sassy or hottrick chassis and put a full thorp gear box on the back with adjustable pinion gear, ran CRP front bushing supported arms and CRP steering knuckles with a CRP trans suspension beef up kit, centered the steering servo and ran some good turnbuckles and pivot joints you would have a mean frog.

and trying to finish this build up, but with blackfoot body wheels and suspension.

I have made some upgrades on my Tomahawk, big bore Landjump shock's, Thorp ball-diff and a wider CRP front together with modern tires. And that gave me 3:d place in the qualifying last VONats

The new scorpion has a ball diff, all metal transmission except the spur, and a slipper clutch. The new transmission is a work of art.

Wow Dan...I was reading all the mods on the Frog, and I've tried them all. In hindsight, I should've trashed it and went with the RC10 much sooner. Thanks for sharing the pics of the Red Frog...I haven't seen one of those in 30 years! Nice job!
The older I get, the faster I was.
