Thanks button - delay

Post by Lonestar »

First - many, MANY thanks to all who keep this site alive. I know it's a lot of work. I know the site's traffic has also gone down over the past years, so I have the utmost respect for the admins and folks who keep this afloat. THANK YOU.

Having said that - is there a way to get rid of the "thank you for submitting - you will be returned to the topic shortly" message when one clicks the thumbs-up button? I feel the wait kinda breaks the enthusiasm felt when going thru a great thread... is it just me?

thanks!

Foremost, you're very welcome. It's been a lot more work than I ever expected it to be but totally worth it ultimately. Traffic has actually increased exponentially in the 3 years I've been at the helm vs going back several years prior. In the summer months it gets pretty slow but that's to be expected.

I automatically assumed removing the post thanking notices would be something I'd have to contact the creator of in order to see if they could be removed somehow. Before I did that, I looked at its settings real quick, and you're in luck. There's one for disabling them after giving a thanks. I enabled the setting so that should take care of it.

Now on a related note, I just wanted to add something for the members here in general. The forum software we use is heavily modified which is both a good thing and a bad thing. It's good because it adds improved functionality, aesthetics, and user experience. It's a bad thing as some of the modifications aren't going to be around forever. They're all dependent on the developers maintaining them. Once they stop doing so which happens frequently, the mod eventually loses compatibility and has to be uninstalled. Take this 'Thanks for post' mod we use for example. The person who created it has stopped updating it, and another developer has created their own version as a result. When we update the boards software, we'd have to start using the new version of the mod. That means the old one would have to be uninstalled, and all the 'thanks' which have accumulated on pre-existing posts will be lost. What I'm getting at is don't get too attached/accustomed to some of the boards features as they're not guaranteed to be around forever unfortunately.

Thank you Sir for enabling this - this is much much easier to use now :)

Understood about the customized interface implications.

thanks and keep up the great work!

Paul

Edit: so I've thanked you and removed the thanks to see what happened... then trying to add the thanks back in - doesn't seem to show any more... am I doing something wrong? Thanks (haha)

That appears to be the case as I just tried it, and it wouldn't allow me to thank your post again. I'll look into it, and see what I can find.

I messed around with it, and tried the only fix I could find, and it crashed the board. Now the thumbs up/down button no longer works properly at all. :? I'll work on it more later. It's 4am here and I'm off to bed. Image

It's not your fault. Who knew that would happen? I sure didn't. It was supposed to be a simple thing that instead exposed a bug in the mod. The developer is to blame. Worst case scenario I'll just reinstall it or the other version that's available. We'd lose all the preexisting 'thanks' attached to posts though which I'd like to avoid of course.

Well I was finally able to get it working again without losing any of the 'Thanks' given or received to posts. :) The issue still remains of not being able to rethank a post after removing an initial one. The developer is claiming the mod must be conflicting with one of the other mods we use. They don't seem to care much beyond that.
