My Lazer ZX-R

Post by Snake Plissken »

Got my Lazer new in 1991-1992, it was probably an overkill for me at the time, as there were no rc tracks in my area back then. It was ran for a while and then put aside when I started my army service. My brother used it in the late 90's at a local track when I was at college, so it did have a decent milage run through it.
Fast forward to 2007, after a long time I decided to resurrect it from storage. It was in pretty good condition so all I had to do was clean it, add oil to the shocks and get some new tires. This is the ZX-R first gen. version that has the 7 battery slots chassis with the battery placed a little more forward. At some point I broke the front shock tower and replaced it with an updated version. The body is a Parma Tomcat I got on the bay a few years ago, I think its one of the nicest bodies available for the Lazer.
I'm currently running it against other vintage 4WD at the local track and kicking myself for letting it sit all these years, its such a great buggy!

YZ-10 -sorry, I totally forgot to take chassis pics. I'll take some and post them here when I'll have a chance.

MR. ED -I think you got the wrong impression about the size of vintage meetings here in Israel, its basically 3-4 people meeting at the track. No actual rules apply, you run what you bring (although we do try to drive together the separate classes -4WD/2WD/trucks). This makes for interesting comparison between the generations: Hotshot, Boomerang, Top Force, Optima and Lazer all driving together.

Very nice and that shell brings back memories. However the zxs shell is still available and I actually prefer the zxs shell to the Parma.

If you need proper advice and upgrades that you can still get try http://www.radiocontrolzone.com under the lazer section. I would look thru pages 5 onwards and you will see a lot of redeveloping and bringing it up to nowadays speed.

If you need advice just ask and we will help you out.

I have a nib ZX-S shell around that I got from Tower a few years ago when they still carried them, but I'm not sure it would fit the ZX-R without replacing the chassis, I'll have to check it out one day...

Love the Tomcat body, for once Parma made a body that looked better than the original :D

No, it doesn't fit neatly on the ZX-R chassis, the sloping sides of the undertray hit the edges of the Lazer chassis. The body fits straight on though. If you narrow the chassis to fit the body Marwans Mid Special body has much cleaner lines than the ZX-S and is identical in size.

Correct. They appear to be identical to the original ZX-R (apart from the color obviously): same offset etc.
RichieRich: Yes, they are the same as the rear RB5.

The ZXS shell is a better design than the Optima LWB shell, and you can always cut the hole on the shell to let the air in (a must if using a 10 double on a high ratio).

The mid shell wont be any good for you due to the screw bumps on the undertray, as you'll rip it to shreds very quickly on the tracks you race on, as well as the rear end on the shell, its not a perfect fit like the ZXS. Believe me I have done all of this already, hence why its worth reading the thread and picking all the tips up.

The undertray is a tight fit, but if you move the servo further inwards on the chassis and backwards (make sure you are using Associated RC10 B2 or B3 servo mounts to do this, and it places the servo side almost touching the belt) and doing this you will be able to file a bit off the chassis. Otherwise Fibre lyte do a worldwide service and you can upgrade the car so its even more competitive than it already is.

The designs on the other web site have been trialed and tested and proven to work, so take your time and read thru it and you will hopefully like what you read.

Your car is in a great condition so not really that much to do. Have fun and hope to see you on the other site sometime soon.

Also the ZX5 standard cheapo buggy wheels are a direct fit to the ZX, ZXR, ZXRR, ZXS as I use them on my ZXS. The SP versions (the flat rims) are a different offset, and look nice but they will not be up to the standard for this car which is a pity.
