Vintage rustler

Post by 3otic »

How much money should I pay for a 1990s rustler in good condition with working motor and esc I'm doing a retro mod and switching motor and esc to xl-5 and traxxas brushed motor and going to change the transmitter to traxxas as well I'm trying to do it for under $250 and if I go brushless what will I have to change?

You should pay what you are comfortable paying for it.

That is about as much of an answer as you are going to get here. This forum doesn't value rigs.
I build RCs like people would have done back in the '90s ..................................... if they had 3D printers.

Keep in mind that there really isn't much difference between a vintage rustler and a modern one other than electronics. Compare prices with a new one and account for wear and such. In the end you decide on what you are willing to pay. We do not discuss prices and values here. What its worth to me with my finances will be different than what its worth to you and everyone else here.

Does anyone know what I would have to change if I put a brushless system?

The VXL's had upgraded transmission components. The early Rulon peg slipper clutch isn't up to the power either. Probably earlier to buy a VXL transmission on Ebay and swap the components, rather than buying them individually.

The new Drag Slash transmission is an option as well

Regardless of electronics used, I'd upgrade the steering blocks and rear carriers to versions that use the beefier 11mm bearings. The early 8mm bearings aren't very tough.
Always looking for new and interesting ways to waste money.

I like the bodies on these older ones much better than the new rustler bodies. I'm in for more pics. from what I can see I have to wonder if it was ever ran.

From what the previous owner told me it had been ran once or twice before he bought it and kept it in till he sold it to me undriven
I agree the old body looks way better
