Project Hyper Hornet

Post by Frankentruck »

I've always liked the Hornet, but it has a lot of limitations. It needs more capability to back up the Anytime Baby! attitude. I've been looking for a good condition runner to experiment on, but then a nicely modified shelfer came my way at a "cheaper than a beater" price . That'll do. 😁

I haven't decided yet on mid or rear motor configuration. Rear motor would be a bit more of an abdomen / stinger look but then throws the motor more into the dirt spray zone. The main thing I still need to source are some stub axles. Probably going with CVD type, but might consider dogbones just to have the design option of different lengths.

No updates yet. There are a few other projects still ahead of it.

Trying to keep the same wheel base with a B4 gearbox is posing a little problem. First attempt at a rotated stationary gearbox position resulted in a clash between motor and left shock. Motor needs to be further forward.

Ok, gearbox position is basically decided. It got flipped around into a mid motor position and now everything has better clearance. It does mean though that I'll need to drill a hole in the gearbox so the top shaft can exit to the right and the motor will be rotating forward. I'll also have to make a gear cover for an opposite side motor plate.

Also, my motor to go with the ESC that I plan to use arrived.

The next issue is going to be finding rear axles and dogbones or CVDs of the right length that work with these outdrives. My intent is to use the original Hornet rear wheels so a 5mm rear axle is the goal.

A little more progress. I still need to decide on which rear axles to use. I see CVDs available for The Frog but I'm not sure how well they will work with the Associated gearbox outdrives. I really want to be able to use the Hornet rear wheels. I also need to determine if I want to stay with Hornet rear shocks or upgrade a bit.

Tamiya outdrives are slightly larger than Associated. The bone doesn't fit.

Have you ever tried an Associated dogbone in a Tamiya outdrive? Is it too sloppy to be considered a viable option?

Actually, I think I have a solution. One of my buggies came with Tamiya wheels on it and had these axle extenders. This will allow me to use the Hornet wheels with Associated rear axles. I'd like to pick up a spare set of the extenders, but that might be a difficult search. I think the Tamiya wheel adapter kit for the RC10 was made/sold by CRP, but these do look a lot like axle adapters that A&L sold with monster truck conversion wheels. Maybe Jeff has some in his Factory Works supplies.

We have 4mm and 10-32 axle nuts still, but the 8-32 are long gone. I did rethread a couple sets of 4mm to 8-32 and it felt like it worked fine (Daryl used to rethread 4mm locknuts to 8-32 for a “low profile” wheel nut) so it’s possible but nothing I would want to do for resale. Hit me up if you need the 4mm nuts and want to thread em.

Sorry, I had it backwards.

The ball of the Associated bone is slightly larger than the Tamiya. 6.25 vs 5.85mm. Tamiya bones fit well enough in AE drives but AE bones will not fit Tamiya drives.

Hmmm.... I was set on my new path with RC10 axles instead of Frog axles. Any thoughts on how I determine the length difference between RC10 dogbones and re-re Frog dogbones? The length difference might be a reason for me to consider the Frog parts.
