Re-re Optima Mid with EXO Design chassis

Post by ahenderl »

Just finished my Optima Mid re-re

EXO Designs swb classic version chassis & Rc Screwz stainless screw set. Pretty well stock other than universal drive shafts and a Kyosho HD mid gear and a set of Kyosho titanium turn buckles.

I bounced back & forth quite a bit between the the parallel or perpendicular battery position. I ended up positioning the battery as I did because it gave me full access to the steering servo with the battery removed. If the battery was placed in the perpendicular position the esc is mounted opposite the servo so the esc would have to be removed to service the servo.

This also allowed for a thicker battery. With the battery mounted perpendicular it has to be mounted on top of the belt cover which means the battery has to be thinner. The parallel mounting position sets the battery flat against the lower chassis plate and allows for a 25mm battery. I also feel it is more secure than using the velcro straps.

I used a ProTek low profile servo so that it wouldn't overhang the side of the chassis.

Looks awesome! Just waiting on my titanium turnbuckles and cvas to get here so I can build mine. I like the tecnacraft feeling of those turnbuckles.

Wheels are from Pargu. Tires are from Marwan. These are for the shelf. I may try to paint the tire lettering white.

I'm not hard-core box-art with my re-re's, but rather box-art...ish. I took some liberties with left-over decals from my other Kyosho releases. It may not suit the purist but it looks good to me.

Nice one Adam

with the comment about the thinner battery being needed, are you saying that the shorty you have in the car in the photos wouldnt fit in the car if the battery was mounted in the perpendicular position?

For "runner" wheels an tires, I am trying to decide if I prefer white or black Turbo Optima wheels on re-re tires. I do prefer the Turbo Optima wheels but will keep the Optima Mid Pargu wheels on it for the shelf.

That is true. The battery I used would not fit if mounted perpendicular. It is too tall. However, a thinner battery would and there are plenty of batteries out there that will fit. If you go perpendicular, just measure to make sure.

After going back-and-forth many times between the two layouts I think the parallel position suits the chassis better.

The Kyosho velcro straps are used if you go perpendicular. In the end, I think the battery is much more secure with the EXO Design mounting system than it is using the Kyosho straps. It may noy be a big deal for some, bit I tend to crash HARD...lol

Good call, I much prefer a secure battery mounting system, thanks for the confirmation.

Yup, now I’m going to have to build my own version. Probably a TOMS Sprocket Edition
